I need opinions on Sub Options

I haven't seen this question in the archives.

I'm considering sub options for my '93 SNOB. I'm running a Punch 160.2 to the towere speakers and want to add a sub and run the amp in tri-mode.

The question is: Should I go with a 10", a 12", or 2 8" subs put in a custom box under the drivers footrest?

Your oppinions and explanations will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Joe

I decided to run a JL 12w6 w/ a dedicated amp(Fosgate 6001bd). I think it would have to be a pretty small sub to run a 160 watt amp w/ tower speakers. If I understand your question correctly...I'm not even sure you can run that 2 channel amp 3 ways. You'd have to run the tower speakers in parallel(sp?)and the sub from the owther channel.

Thanks for the input GU. As far as the amp is concerned, I'm not worried about the amp. For those that know old school Fosgate amps, they are way under rated and when used with coils and capacitors can be run stereo with a third channel for subs by connecting the left(+) and Right (-) together. The stereo channels are stable at 2 ohm and the "third" channel is stable at 4 ohms. I ran a whole rear end of a car with a punch 45 way back in highschool using this configuration ad it rocked most of my friends more expensive systems. I'm not worried about the power.

However, due to my lack of playing with sub set-ups, i'm not sure if I will get more bass from running one 4ohm 10", one 12", or 2 2ohm series/8 ohm parallel subs. I know the Bose wuffers produce a lot of bass using ported 6" drivers so I'm curious. I don't want to spend a lot of money and time experimenting.

If any of you who have experimented in the past knows a way to get the most bass for the buck with this type of set up, please let me know.

      Thanks,

        here are some suggestions..

i would suggest a 12" sub...( i am very partial to the image dynamic idq series-high output & sound quality with mimimal box)..if you can fit 2 12'2 it would be better...

boat audio is alot different that car or home audio in that the car enviornment is reinforced (hence more efficent) and a boat is unreinforced ( you will need 2x-3x the amount of clean power / drivers to achieve the same db level...

the bose box design you are referring to a ported 6th order design..if you are lookin to build a box like that...good luck!!!! there arent design parameters around for that..if you have ever heard a rel or a james sub, it blows the bose away in evey parameter...

the disadvantage of using that amp comfiguation is you have to use passive crossover components for the components and sub which suck a lot of juice in the process (the passive sub x-over are EXTREMELY inefficent compared to a electronic crossover)

        good luck !!

I am using an Alpine 12 in a plastic tube (looks like a shop vac base), I bought it on e-bay. Super easy install. Use a dedicated amp, I am running a Hifonics BX1500D and it does pretty well.
