    upgrading sub on g23

has anybody upgraded the sub to a 12" in the factory location? Im looking at changing it out to the wet sounds XS-XXX and was curious as to how much work it will be to install it.

Am having an XS-XXX installed in my G25 as we speak though similar to nauty220's G23, MLA is moving the sub enclosure to the side of the compartment so it can fire out where the trash door is. He will be enlarging the hole there to provide better venting to the interior of the boat. I will lose easy access to the trash can but that's not that big a deal to me - want good, tight bass more than easy access to a small trash can.

The stock sub was taken out and that's where my amp rack will be. Hopefully done in the next week or so and I can report back with pictures and results. The XS-XXX will be driven by an SD2 if I recall correctly.

I had the factory enclosure fiberglass sealed inside and had a JL 10" W6 installed in the factory location. Sealing the box and with that sub it POUNDS. so much so that the plastic for the slide air dam rattles with the bass on certain songs.

I wanted to do minimal modifications to the boat and still get better sound. Why do you want to upgrade to a 12"?

no particular reason in going with the 12" other an im upgrading all the speakers to wetsounds and that was the one i chose. i really dont know anything about a stereo system of amps so im just going off the salesmans word. Id like to do minimal modifications as well but in upgrading the stereo system and adding amps maybe going the route of jrz1 might be the best way to go to have the room for the amps?

There's plenty of room along inside of outside wall. Think placement where im putting it is to max impact of sub.

I can post pictures of my setup when I get home. I put in 3 JL HD amps and a kinetic battery in the same mounting location of the stock amps.

Here are the amps on the back wall where the OEM sub was. I didn't feel need to do any sort of fancy back lit acrylic amp rack. I'm sure this one will hold them just fine.

                CHelms,

There are two issues with upgrading to a 12" sub in the OEM location on a G23. 1) theres not a lot of surface area around the stock 10" to enlarge the the hole and mount a larger sub. One might fit, but it would be close. 2), thats an open cavern back there. When you pull the sub out, its open to the bilge and you can see the below-floor belly sac. So you would be running the sub infinite-baffle (free-air) as the stock sub is. IMP, the improvement would not offset the investment of the sub. On a side note, im not even sure if the stock Polk is actually designed for IB, I dont think it is.

As promised, this is my current G23 stereo setup. That is 3 amps (2xJL600/4 MHD, 1xJL750/1MHD), the sub is a JL 10W6 and there is a kinetic battery there to handle the loads. I also installed the clarion EQ on the side by the trash can for adjustments and to boost the inputs to 4V preouts.

The speakers I am running in the boat are all Focal 165KRC which sound amazing. Still using the stock roswell tower speakers which are bridged to one of the 4-channel amp outputs and they sound really good actually, pretty clear behind the boat.

I hope this helps your decision.

Did you box in the back side of the factory enclosure or are you running that 10W6 free air?

Consider replacing the Clarion EQ with an AudioControls EQS. It's night and day sound difference.

I had the enclosure completely fibreglass sealed so the sub pounds really well!

I will look into this although i am completely happy with the sound quality of the system as is. The focal speakers are crystal clear even at super high volumes. I had a hissing noise when I first installed the system, however the solution to that was to cut the deck power from the factory harness and power it directly from a shorter wire to remove the noise. No other problems with the clarion.
