Replacing XMD1 to newer unit in '02 SN196

Guys, what is the best way to replace my dying XMD1 HU in my '02 SN? Pretty sure the newer models will not drop in directly w/o some sort of modification. The CD player is dead and I'd like to upgrade to something that I can run my ipod off of, or use bluetooth to stream music from my phone.

Hey Bret, do you have the head unit in the glove box and a remote at the helm??

Chris, it is in the helm, in line with the driver seat, right below my elbow. Below the radio there is a couple little empty storage compartments with netting. Pretty sure that whole panel is removeable, there's a bunch of screws in the panel.

I think that is the adapter you'd need to move up to a cmd6/7/8. If you have any remotes, you'd need to upgrade them too.

Thanks beach! No remote so I don't have to worry about that. Is it necessary to remove the panel to pull the hu? If so, what is the process?

I got an 03 210, so my stereo is in the glovebox. I was going to take a look at the spring on my throttle arm this weekend, so I'll post back with what it takes to remove that panel on an 03. Hopefully someone with an 95-02 posts here before then about how they removed the panel and if that adapter trim piece worked.

Updating this old thread. Finally got around to ordering the new stuff. I ended up going with a single-din Clarion M303 and the adapter plate that Nautique Parts sells. The good news is that the new HU apparently uses the same harness as the old one so the swap should be a breeze. I'm going to go ahead and install a Eclipse 5ch amp I have had for a while and then build a sub box for a Kicker Comp VR 12" sub that's also been looking for a good home. Will post up some pics as I move forward with the install. Boat is going in to get the bimini chopped down tomorrow for a more low-pro look. Once back it's time for some better tunes.

Well, minor setback today. I received my adapter plate from Nautiqueparts and the Clarion HU I ordered from evilbay. A little disappointed in the adapter plate. It's not even CLOSE to fitting! Maybe my boat is one of a kind but I just double-checked the website and it specifically says it is for XMD/CMD radios. So now I have a $40 piece of aluminum that I basically have to fab up myself to make fit properly. I could have saved a lot of money and just started from scratch with a blank. The cutout for the radio doesn't even fit!

I would just sawzall the dash to make it fit, lol

If it's not a keeper you should throw it back and just fab your own.
