Xs-12 vs 10w6

So I threw my xs-12 in my Yukon today. It's not apples to apples bc the 12 is in a ported box, but w/o adjusting the amp it sounds phenomenal. I might have to go ported on the 10w6

I hope my response is not too incomplete. With all else being equal, surface area rules, period. Check the T/S parameters on the 10w6 and see how its going to react in a ported. The XS-12 works well in both a sealed and a ported and a ported will yield more output.

i was expecting louder because of increased s.a. like you mentioned, but the sound quality seemed very close with my limited testing. i just didn't expect that because it sounds way different in my truck than in my boat and it's alot cheaper than my jl w6.

All things being equal in driver construction, a 12" woofer has nearly 2 dB more output over a 10" based on typically a 52% increase in surface area.
All things being equal in driver construction, a conservative bass-reflex (ported) alignment will produce 3 dB more output over a sealed enclosure, and even more in a peaky alignment.
To put things in perspective, a 3 dB increase in output is equivalent to a doubling of amplifier power.
So that easily explains why you find an output difference. A 12-inch in a ported enclosure vesus a 10-inch in a sealed enclosure could sound exactly like it has four times the power behind it.
A Wetsounds XS-12 and JL Audio W3 12" are more similar.
The primary upgrade from the JL Audio W3 to a W6 is the difference in controlled excursion. So the W6 will generate more output than a W3 of equal size...'IF'...you have the extra amplifier power available. Double the excursion requires double the power. And, a longer excursion woofer generally has more mass, a longer voice coil, and requires more power to drive it due to a slightly lower internal efficiency.

I should also mention that the same woofer in the enclosed cabin of a truck would automatically enjoy a 9 dB output increase versus the open air environment of a boat, and that output increase significantly multiples in the truck as the frequency goes lower.
