Getting rid of cloth speaker covers

I have a '00 SAN and hate the cloth speaker covers in the boat. Is it possible to cut out the cloth and replace with the Polk style grilles? Anyone do this already?

Its been done by many. I don't like the cloth either but don't like the protruding grills more. I would like to recess mine when the upholstery is redone, if I can find a good method!

I agree with Ray. Mine were swapped to grills by the PO but I am contemplating going back to cloth when I have my combing pads reupholstered this spring. The grills look much better but they are no fun when you are using them as a seat back. I like Ray's idea to recess them. I think if you mounted them directly to the combing pad board and then upholstered with foam around them they would not protrude very far. Hmm that is definitely something to think about since I am going to redo the combing pads anyway.

But to answer your question, if you want to do it I think you just need to cut the cloth with a razor blade while being careful not to cut the speaker. Then screw your grills to the front. There are probably some good methods to avoid screwing up the vinyl but I have never done this.
