I picked the boat up this afternoon. Things did not go quite as planned. I can say this, the money spent inside the panel is invaluable. Not a single raffle or vibration with the reinforcing and sound dampening put in. It's a must do for sure. Where it did not go as planned is they made the decision for me to install the JL IB5. This as well was a great move, unfortunately I did not want to spend this money. They sold it to me at cost and took some money of labor for tuning and so but was still $225 more than we agreed the cost of the work would be.

Everything sounds incredible though. I would recommend this upgrade to anyone considering it.

The Polk will never sound good in an infinite baffle setup, the parameters for it just don't support that utilization. It works will in my tow vehicle in a small sealed enclosure. I hate it when shops do work without authorization, that said that price for a M10IB5 installed and tuned sounds like money well spent to me, especially if you like the outcome.

We went out today and my one complaint is it needs to be at pretty high volume before the bass is noticeable. Sure this could be cured by putting more power to the sub but it sure sounds good turned up and I still have all my storage.

Can you talk about the additional reinforcements that were done? Was the panel removed? If I can remember correctly the panel does not go back in very easily.

I can try but you would be much better off giving Chris at Earmark Lewisville a call and I'm sure he would be happy to help.

From what I understand they pulled all the panels off including the panel that surrounds the throttle and filled or lined them all with some type of sound insulator. The problem as explained to me was that when the sub extruded the panel was flexing with it not giving the sub a proper place to reseat causing terrible distortion. When you watch the panel previous to this you could physically see the panel move with the sub, the panel sits still now and there is zero rattles regardless of how loud and how much bass is coming out of the sub.

Thanks for pulling that up. For those interested, I'm not sure if the ring alone will do the trick. I think more of the success in my situation was the sound deadening used to stop the rattles. Could be wrong though. I guess if you stop the panel from moving so much there is a chance that will stop some rattles too.

While it was not my Earmark Plano shop that did the project, I totally agree with what the Earmark Lewisville shop and why they did it.

There are two required solutions and both are very important.

First, the panel needs to be reinforced. You wouldn’t place an air suspension woofer in a compliant enclosure, and an infinite baffle woofer should receive the same consideration. Any mounting baffle that moves in the slightest is wasting precious acoustic energy. Also understand that the typical sub enclosure is somewhat decoupled from the boat structure while a coaming panel is not.

Second, the Polk Audio subwoofer is a low ‘Q’ driver that is essentially undamped and very dependent on the trapped and rigid air mass in a small sealed enclosure for control. If placed into an infinite baffle application then it is analogous to a heavy weight on a loose spring and without a damping shock absorber. That means extra unchecked inertia and movement. Thus a great deal of vibration is created beyond the scope of the music dynamic content and that excessive vibration is transmitted through the boat parts, particularly the panels and parts in closest proximity. Imagine driving down the road and suddenly the fluid escaped from ALL the shocks. Now every bump in the road would constitute weightless passengers. The JL Audio subwoofer model is a true high ‘Q’ infinite baffle subwoofer that is well self-damped through a combination of mechanical and electrical design elements. The JL Audio product fits the given application here. The Polk Audio does not.

After a full weekend on the water I can tell you it's a major improvement and every bit worth the $700 worth of work they did. My only disappointment is it takes quite a bit of volume before you can really hear the sub. In a ported or sealed enclosure you get the sound at all levels. I assume it's somewhat a function of the infinite baffle situation and possibly not quite enough power driving the sub. I imagine if I had 350-400 watts pushing it I would not have this problem.

CC, have you tried to turn up the sub output in the head unit? I am running the two factory polk amps with all speakers being ran by them and get plenty of sub volume at all levels, but I have to up the output in the head unit to get it there.

I have it set at +1, could try a little more I just hate to add any low end to the in boats. I had them tune the system as well so I don't want to mess with it too much. At high volume it sounds incredible, loins and very clear.

I am assuming you are still powering it with the 5000.5 amp. Did you had a EQ? Just curious because there is a sub gain on the eq that may just be what you need. I know you wanted to keep the cost down so I am not sure what "extras" other than the sub, ring, and install work you had done.

I am using the 5000.5 and had a remote level controller installed for the sub but not add an EQ.
