How do I get rid of background noise?

I had a new system installed and he can't seem to get rid of background noise. When engine is off, there is no noise which is part of the problem as he's working on the boat in his garage so when we check it out it sounds great. Once we're on the lake, there's background noise when the boat is running and worsens when accessory button like the ballast pump is turned on. Any suggestion?

The ground wire is usually the problem. You need to have a good ground to a good location. I run mine straight to the battery.

If the boat has dual battery banks, I would look to where the new gear's B+ is terminated.

As far as I can tell, it's grounded to the battery...how would be able to tell if it's grounded elsewhere?

If Ground is already at battery... Do as MLA states and check B+. Try and also have it at the battery. When you get background noise in your stereo is because there is interference in your power sources. If all else fails look for a noise eliminator and run it in your power cables to your stereo.
