stereo woes - upgrade gone horribly wrong

So like many of you I was excited about adding some horsepower to my stereo setup (a mostly entry-level system). I have been looking around since last winter and finally pulled the trigger on new tower speakers, amps and sub. I purchased (4) Rev10s and (2) Arc Audio KS600.2 amps on CL and a Rockford 12" P3D2 sub and WS 420BT from the installer. I have a Clarion deck and stock inboat speakers. Totally psyched to get it into the installer last week with pickup scheduled for last Friday.

So I get to the installer Friday and was escorted into the shop area. Walking up the guy looked like he got punched in the stomach. I'll spare the conversation but apparently one of the amps has a defective channel and was putting out 46 volts. So when he turned the system on to tune, it blew 2 of the Rev10s immediately...smoked them (I can still smell it). He showed me the voltage on the voltmeter when the system was turned off. So I have 2 Rev10s gone and a half an amp. Still a great sounding system...but ****!

I'm sure I have no recourse with the guy who sold the equipment to me on CL and obviously WS and Arc won't warranty the parts. I figure I'm out about $1000-$1500 (not including the cost of install). Don't really know what to do...except just take it like a man. Just thought you guys would be sensitive of my situation (yes, I'm crying in my beer).

That sucks to hear, but I love your version of a "mostly entry-level system"! I think Arc will repair their amps but at what cost I'm not sure. Give WS a call.... Maybe they can help you with rebuild parts?

Terrible luck, this is a risk you take buying used gear and not using an auth retailer/installer.... but here are a couple thoughts:

You can send the amp to Arc and have it rebuilt and tested. reccomend you start there. Arc600.2 is a great amp, a similiar replacement will be $400-600. Call today and ask for a rebuild/certify cost. Arc is known for A+ customer service.

As far as the Rev10s, you are not 100% SOL $1000-1500 by any means. Contact Wetsounds, talk them through your situation and and ask to pay for parts of the cone/horn only. Installers warranty the Rev10s all the time for assorted issues. Fairly certain parts are available.

Absolute worst case scenario, the replacement cheapest version Rev10s are under $1000... and the housing and clamps with the 10" speaker removed are still worth 200-300$ empty. that puts you into $700 range for a new set to replace.

One part I didnt understand... you said 2 Revs gone and 1/2 an amp? you have one bad amp or 2 bad amps?

Yeah I knew I was gambling when I decided to buy used equipment. Live and learn.

@nyryan - Thanks for the advice. I got such a good deal on the Rev10s and amps that even if it costs me a little to get them repaired I'm still ahead. I'll contact Arc and WS and see what my options are. I'd love to get them all working at some point, even if it takes some time. And to clarify, I purchased (2) 600.2s. One is set up to run the (4) Rev10s and the other is set up to power the sub. So effectively now one is running the sub and the busted amp is still running one channel to the (2) remaining Rev10s. Make sense?

Also to clarify, my "mostly entry level system" was not referring to my new setup but my old. Here's what I had originally:

Clarion deck (M309)
stock in boat speakers
(2) MB Quart tower speakers (5" coax)
(1) Kenwood 10" sub (turned out to be blown)
(1) Clarion APA4204 amp (POS...was running to sub and towers, now powering in boat speakers)

New setup:
Clarion deck
stock Clarion in boat speakers
(4) Rev10s
(1) RF P3D2 12" sub
(2) Arc Audion 600.2 amps (one to tower, one to sub)
WS420 BT
dual battery with relay
