I think space constraints will be the biggest factor in the sealed vs. ported decision.

I have also seen owners build custom ported boxes for these locations.

Its been a long time since I've messed with audio stuff. Whats the cool 12" to have these days? I use to have Rockford Fosgate Power T2's back in my dumber high school days. I probably don't need quiet that much this go around.

I dont handle the polk line, so what ever source you used for the current DB's and PA amp should take care of you.

As far the enclosure goes, you have 3 ways to go. Some woofers perform best in a ported, some best in a sealed and others go both ways. So the woofer choice will help steer you in that direction. More importantly, the available space to place the woofer, is going to be the biggest driving force. Once you have an idea of what the enclosures gross dimension could be, you can then start looking at which woofer works best in which enclosure that will fit the available space. And dont over look the amp choice. Go with a woofer class thats a good match for the amp power.
