    A better alternative to MDF

    Hey guys,

There is tons of great information on this site especially stereo info. I thought I would share some of my knowledge.

Most people here are using MDF for speaker boxes and amp boards. There is an alternative that is better. It is called Medex. It looks MDF. It machines like MDF. But, it's also water resistant. It’s even manufactured without formaldehyde. I believe it was actually designed for street signs. It should be the choice material for the boat. It’s only a couple more bucks per sheet.

I used for all my speaker boxes and amp board on the ol'86. It worked great.

So if you're getting ready to build and thinking MDF, try Medex. And no, I don’t work for any company that would benefit from the sale of Medex.

    Just my 2 cents.

MDF is readily available at home improvement stores so, aquiring material is simple. Haven't heard of Medex nor seen it in my local store. If it were as readily available and provided the same function then I'd be willing to give it a shot.

I picked it up at the local lumber yard. I walked in and asked for a sheet of 3/4 and 1/2 gave them my money and left. I guess it all depends on were you live and whats available.

What gave you the idea to try this stuff? Did anykind of stereo website talk about it....I am just concerned about the density and rigidity of the material as well as the accustical differences in the two materials? I do know that there is a site that makes a sweet enclosure for tower speakers and subs out of fiberglass... check them out at www.audioformz.com ....
