    Ski 196 Install

Just did a clean install in my 98 Ski Nautique. I didn't go for a showy look, just wanted to have some quality sound with some deep base.

Most of the posts I've read here are about installing in Air Nautiques where there is a lot more space than a Ski, so I thought I'd share what I did for anyone interested.

I put 1 twelve inch sub in a sealed enclosure under the bow in front of the drivers consol. Those of you with a Ski will know that this part is elevated compared to the port side, I managed to find a simple sub box that would fit in this space. I used a couple simple 'L' brackets to attach it to the floor to keep it in place. I mounted a 4 channel Clarion amp on the left side of the panel that separates the drivers foot well from the ski locker. It was a nice mount, and has easy access for adjusting gains and crossovers, but some care is needed to not place wet skis or vest beside the amp. I'm running a pair of 6 inchers off the front channel and a single, bridged sub off the rear channel.

I replaced the 2 front factory speakers with 6 inch clarions and maintained the original grills by just mounting the speakers behind. Not too flashy but it sounds great and doesn't stand out to potential theives. I've powered the system by purchasing a deep cycle battery that I mounted in the bow on the centerline. It's connected to the alternator via an electronic isolator so I can run the stereo all day and not worry about draining the starting battery. Had the first water test today and all worked great. Despite the engine noise at speed, the sub comes through to give the subtle bass that I was looking for. No tower speakers to hear while riding, that was not my goal, just a full sounding system to be heard occasionally and usually when parked at the dock or on the beach.

Will post some photos if anyone is interested in seeing.

    Cheers,

    Pete

Here's a shot of the amp mount point. This was taken with the passenger seat raised. You'll notice a battery case in the background, this is the second battery that powers the entire stereo system and the accessories. What you can't see is the sub box, which sits to the right of the battery case in front of the drivers consol.

The wires are a bit messy, I left plenty of slack in them so that I can pull the battery case all the way out. Might try and hide those a bit.

The amp mount was very easy since that piece is not fibreglass.

            nice work peteski,
I have put a similar setup in ours, except all my speakers are amped, and the amps are installed behind the drivers kick pannel. I'm going to build a new sub box though as I think mine is a little small.

To hide those wires a bit better, just put them in more split tube and tuck them up beside the sub box.?

Here is a pic of my install on a 196
Just one 8 in sub and 2 amps up front. The amps are mounted to the side of the hull above the hump. I decided they would stay dry and not be in the way of the storage area that I use a lot. I used #8 for power and ground wire, each amp is grounded back to the battery. I don't have a second battery yet, im going to give it an outing or two to see if its needed. I carpeted the hump after the photo and thats where the sub sits.

darrel409, What did you use to attach the spacers to the hull? Thanks, -MG

mgswed, I used three pieces of 1 in. plywood, cut to the shape of the side of the hull. One on each side and one on top. They're not tall, but lifts the mounting board 2 in. away from the hull. I epoxyed in place then went back and glassed it in w/ a couple layers of mat. It couldnt get more solid, probably overkill but inexpensive and easy to do. The mouning board has 3, 2 inch cooling holes behind each amp and the one hole you can see in pict. is to hide/pull the wires thru. Used stainless steel screws to connect.

                        Hey Darrel,
Looking good mate. Did the factory carpet come away easilly.?

                        MG,
I took a pic for you, just need to download it. But as you'll see, I have a 12" kicker solobaric in a piece of 12"uPVC water main pipe, 1 x Lanzar 2ch (sub), 1 x Sony 4ch (speakers), and a pioneer electronic crossover, all installed above the hump behind the driver kick pannel.

It was only a quick job to get some tunes in the boat, so I am intending on ditching the pvc for a full custom enclusure. It does sound ok, but the sub box is too small.

I'll post the pic asap for you.

Carpet comes off easy, I pulled slow and steady. It goes back just as easy when re-glued. I used spray can glue.

Chopper, wow nice job. I never thought of mounting it that way. I should be getting my two amps today in the mail (so says the online tracking by UPS). My brackets and setup to mount on are complete. Now i just have to order wires, etc. Any suggestions to where i should shop for wires, distribution blocks, etc. Thanks. -MG
