Remove speaker grills on a G23

I'm thinking about replacing the stock in-boat speakers with Wetsounds WS650 or JL MX650.

How do I remove the grills to get at the stock speakers? Can I remove the grill or do I need to remove the entire panel on which the grill is mounted?

    Thanks!

They are the absolutely poorest engineered piece of hardware Nautique ever invented. They are held in place by tab extensions of the black screen that fit into slots in the plastic sideboard panels. They pull off with little force. Replacing them on the other hand is a different issue. I switched mine to velcro.

Thanks...I went out and took one off starting on the side that wraps deepest into the interior panel. Getting them off is pretty easy. Getting them back on was a bit of a pain. I pushed the tabs with a small screw driver so they'd just slide back into the slots and the mesh would spring back to hold them in place. It looks to me like they're installed with the interior panel removed so the tabs can be inserted straight and then bent into place.

Good idea on the velcro--I think I'll go that route next time.

I cannot visualize how you took a tab that fits into a slot and replaced it with velcro. Please explain, as I think I am in store for an interior speaker upgrade. Unless it is one channel of my amp that is giving me crap.

I placed a thin strip of velcro along the rdge of the grilles in several areas and on the sideboard panels. It fortunately takes minimal force to hold them in place.

Thanks! Then that way, I don't have to worry about trying to fold the tabs back to hold it in place, it just will sort of snuggle in, right? I appreciate the idea.

Vision, so you just straighten the tabs, push them in and rely on the Velcro to hold it in place?

On some grills, I attached the Velcro to the existing plastic tabs, using only four of the tabs. It takes very little Velcro to hold the grill in place. On others, I attached the Velcro directly to the edge of the grill. Both methods seem to work equally as well.

Can you give me some more info, I demod a G21 yesterday and am buying it tomorrow. I love everything about the G with the exception on the stereo. I did a really solid system in my last boat and plan to do the same but any info I can get before I start tearing it apart is greatly apprectiated.

After upgrading a tower and subs the weak link is the in boat 6.5s. They are often pushed to their limit to keep up. By having pods made, you can fit 8" or in my case wet sounds 808's. The result is much more clarity and volume. It provides a great balance to the overall system and should be on everyone's list. The hurdle is finding someone who can make them at a reasonable price. They screw into the existing holes for the 6.5s so when I sell the boat they are easily removable and oem speakers can be reinstalled. Legend marine audio in Houston can do them as well as hydrotunes in Austin, that's at least who I have experience with

Kinda off topic but what is the best amp settings for a completely stock 2013 G23 stereo. I am taking delivery of my boat in April but I want to try the stock setup at the best it has before I think about upgrading. I keep hearing how bad the stero is but I want to see for myself how bad it is, I'm not an audiophile but I do like tunes.

Best is a relative term. I understand the question but difficult to answer. I would either wait for delivery and determine what you would like to improve or swing by a dealer that has a 2013 and listen to it in in preparation for delivery in April.

Just FYI on the speaker grills....... It is actually very easy to remove the entire panel to access the tabs on the back of the speaker grill, that way they can be reinstalled correctly. It seems like a big job because half of the interior needs to be removed in order to remove all the speaker/cupholder housings. However, all of the interior panels are just clipped in with little plastic push pins. It literally took me less than 30 minutes to remove all of it from my boat. The hardest part of the whole thing was finding the Allen wrench needed to remove the one screw in the throttle lever.

Wayward I hate to bump an old thread but I am planning on replacing my in boats and am curious about removing the entire panel. Can you provide a little more detail on where you start and remove first? Is it the upholstery piece along the top edge? Any problems with the Christmas tree push pins busting? Special tools needed to pry them out? thanks in advance and hope you are enjoying your new X
