Yet another TOWER question

Buxton sold our 220 and looks like we are going to end up with a new 230 from the great folks at Buxton. Sold the 220 as is w all equipment in it so we are starting with a clean slate. Boat we are looking at has the level 2 kit and pre wired tower. Ive had pro 80s on a boat and Rev 410s powered correctly and they were good but not great to me. Scream in Lewisville did the installs so I know it was done right. I ran into a guy on the lake last year that had JL tower speakers that were super loud and real clean sounding and the speakers were smaller so they didnt eat up as much head room as the REVs.

Any thoughts about other options on super clean sounding towers?

If someone is not happy with the output, volume and SQ from a pair of Rev410.....i got notta! And I say this because I have not demo's the new JL 8.8 tower pods that are recently shipping.

Well maybe Ill try again. I had the same Alpine head unit but did have a 420 on them powered by an ARC somethin or other. I dont remember what it was but was what they shop recomended. I know everyone hearing is different and I know how to adjust the 420 for pitch but it all seemed to bright and not warm sounding. Dont get me wroing they are loud just not clear and clean as Id like them. Again I know its differnent for everyone and subject to the guy behind the tuner.

I wouldn't give up on the 410's and would blame the settings on the amp. If you would like to hear another pair my boat is at buxtons right now. Tell Andrew you want to hear it.

Pro80 plus Rev410 or Pro80 plus Pro485 on the previous boat?

The Wetsounds newer Revs are generally better sounding than the Wetsounds original Pros, but there isn't a major difference in output.

Nothing in the tower speaker industry is going to get louder than the Wetsounds Rev series unless you totally abandoned sound quality.

The new JL Audio 880s have incredible sound quality. Warm. Smooth. Balanced. Great midbass. They're larger than the JL Audio speakers you heard last year. The JL Audio is not an HLCD (horn based speaker) and although they will get loud and project they are not going to be as loud as the Wetsounds.

I had a 226 with pro 80s arc amp and an alpine marine head unit. I moved the head unit and the arc over to a 220 with rev 410s and added the 420. Sorry I wasn't clear. The WS were loud but the wife hated it. She and I agree we like a warmer clear sound the just loud. David you say "not going to be as loud" does that mean half as loud or what? Can you give me an idea. Is it not as loud in a professionals world I probably wouldn't notice it?

Nauty it's funny you say that.... I was at Buxton today and we talked about your boat. I didn't look at it but I may ask Andrew tomorrow if they are not to busy. Did Tim do your install?

Tim has done several installs however this one was done by hydrotunes.

Four properly powered JL Audio 880s is all the volume you would ever need at surf range for example. They are not going to be as loud as an HLCD at wake range. The 880 is an 8-inch just like the Rev8. So the JL 880 and Rev8 will have similar 'average' output but the Rev8 will have more 'peak' output because it is hotter in the treble. A larger 10" HLCD, like the Rev10 will be louder yet simply because it's a horn product and has more surface area. I recently saw on the MB Sport forum where Earmark Marine did an MB with four JL 880s on the tower.

Two alternatives that I also like in this particular application. For four 880s the HD750/1 is more power at less cost. I also like an XD800/8 in the bridged 4-channel mode.

^^^ Bridged with 300 watts strictly regulated and conservatively rated power is over the 250 watt thermal rating.
Personally, I would have zero issue with it, I'd really enjoy all that excess headroom, but then I have zero tolerance for clipping.
So not for everyone. It's really person by person.

David I stopped in and talked w Chris at Lewisville today. Super nice young man and knew his stuff. You could tell he really loves this stuff. He was getting pretty stoked about it as we were talking. I'm not sure which direction I'm going yet but I'll give you guys a swing at it before I purchase. I looked at a little sub box as well. 110 something or other. While it's not "marine" I'm considering this and 7.7 in boats.

That's good to hear. But no need to thank me. I'm not part of Earmark and retired from the ME industry as of two years ago. Just an Earmark friend and customer. I know there is a rare wealth of audio knowledge at Earmark and they have a couple of very talented technicians.
