2003 SN 196 - Adding Speakers

Just purchased a 2003 SN 196. It is wired for stereo but no speakers installed. You can see in the photo the grey handle cushions on either side of the bench. I am curious if I should just cut a hole in those for the speakers, or install something as seen in the second image? If so, where can I get those?

It seems most people place a sub at the driver feet. Can you simply cutout of the kickplate or do you have to build a box that sits in front of kickplate?
