Do you see any issues with aiming the subs to the front and to the rear rather than side to side?

Yes, I would vent the maximum surface area short of turning the boat into Swiss cheese.
'Tactile' is that indiscriminant vibration, too low to be heard, but felt, that excites the boat structure. You want to move air, not the boat. When the boat vibrates it only muddies the bass quality. You are going to get plenty of that anyway with dual 12s in an enclosure that is placed inside another vented enclosure (port observers console), but you don't want to encourage this when it can be helped.
I like both subs oriented away or off center from any/all vents so that the output of both subs and the output of the enclosure are in phase the best they can be. You can't achieve perfection but you do have a little latitude in controlling the outcome.
The most ideal scenario would be for the subs to be direct radiating and totally isolated from the port console air space. Earmark Marine uses manifolds in some applications. But I don't see this as an option in this boat, particularly with dual 12s.

Wow. Thanks so much for the response. Now let me ask if I end up putting four of those 12's in there, how would you orient those?

All these factors can sum for a sound quality difference.
With four 12s the choices are going to be made for you as that space will become extremely tight. What you have space for within the locker and what will fit through the available opening can be two different things.
And with four 12s you are likely going for something that is no longer musical....which is fine. That boat will shake like it's getting jack hammered regardless.

No longer musical? Wow. Being ignorant, I guess I'll have to wait to hear what those two 12's sound like and maybe I'll understand what you're trying to convey. thank you for your continued thoughts.

What is considered 'musical' is certainly subjective, but with four 12s you are going for effect. Again, I have no problem with effect. For example, in my 2-channel home audio system I go for musical accuracy. Big floor standing tower speakers but no sub is needed. In my home theater system I go for (((effect))). Four powerful subs.

Okay. I get it. Yeah, I'm going for "effect." I do want to shake things up. I'm all about feeling what I'm listening to as well as hearing it. I appreciate the "back massage" in my truck with two 12's. In my mind, it adds a third dimension to any song. I can see this system growing to four 12's next year or this winter.

Be careful what you ask for..... I just had two 12" Memphis Audio subs installed in a sealed enclosure, powered by an Arc Audio KS2500.1 and whoa... This thing POUNDS. I'm almost willing to say it pounds too hard. Its actually hard to sit in the observer's seat with the bass turned all the way up. We chucked the garbage can. Still need to work on venting the observer's side storage area to let more audible bass out. It's a work in progress. Super happy with my installer so far. He got me finished up with this first phase of the system in time for us to enjoy all last weekend on the water. I'll post pics when we figure out the best way to vent it.

bass, punch, when you feel the HIT in your chest...probably poor wording, nothing to do with pictures. Just meaning in my boat some additional bass (HIT) would be a great addition.
