    Relocating Subs

I am considering relocating the subs from the port storage to the cooler area on my 02 SANTE, similar to this picture I found. Everything I have read suggests that moving them out of the locker will make them sound better, but really more importantly to me, will free up that space in the locker! I don't use the cooler at all on the boat, so really it is just wasted space at this point. Obviously some people have done this. I am just wondering how you liked it or if there is anything I should be concerned about when I do it. Really, my only concern is the subs are a little more exposed to the elements, but I would plan to put some sort of grill in the front to protect them somewhat.

    Thoughts?

The enclosure is more exposed to the elements and that concerns me much more than exposing a good quality marine subwoofer or even an automotive woofer that is constructed in a water-resistant manner. With the enclosure, the materials, construction and execution will be the key. While not many people will want the sub enclosure out in the cockpit, the acoustic principles supporting this change are definitely sound. You just have to keep the face of the subs a certain distance away from the sole. Since this is open-air it is a little different than the approach taken in a vehicle. The picture shown would be the bare minimum.

      David-
I would coat the enclosure in epoxy resin to protect it. My boat stays relatively dry. I try to get people to towel off on the platform or sun pad. Either way, point taken. Any suggestions to maximize the sound quality in that location? Should the subs be a certain distance from the floor, etc? They are W6s, can't remember right now if they are 10s or 12s. My main goal is getting back my storage. I also have the space behind the drivers seat and could make the seating wrap around, but would have the same challenges there.

The cut ends of MDF or ply are very porous and extremely hard to completely seal. At minimum, several additional steps are required. No matter what the coating, I would stand the enclosure off the sole and off the carpet with ABS or HDPE pads.
