Has anybody installed a satellite radio in their boat yet? I'm looking for tips, particularly the antenna.

I know I saw some installation pics somewhere over the past couple of days...including the antenna. I can't find it now though. Here are a couple of threads on other forums that might help though.

You might also check with forum user EchoLodge. He has Delphi in his boat.

When i went to the florida fly in, this guy had this boat. It was awesome! He had fiberglass custom molded for his FTC with speakers, as you can see. You can also see the screan for a DVD player! However, he did put XM radio in it. The sound was good, but i didn't like the placement of the remote for it. Anyway, his antenna was right behind the back "leg" of the FTC on the drivers side. You can't really see it cuz it blends in with the tower, but i think it is a good place for it, unless someoen is leaning up against it, which will block it totally causing complete silence....

I have a 2001 Air Nautique w/ the FCT. I agree that on top of the tower would be ideal, but I haven't come up w/ a clean way to do that yet. The tower is aluminum isn't it? The antenna is magnetic, so it won't stick to the tower. I'm leery of sticky-tape or velcro. I would hate for it to fly off driving down the highway, particularly in the rain. I guess I could make some kind of bracket, or a plate that I attach to the tower.
Thanks for the link to the threads. I didn't realize it would shoot thru the fiberglass. I kind of like that idea too.

XM in my 90 SN
This is my second year with XM in my boat. I can't imagine life without it now. I just used 3m double back tape and stuck the ant to the top of the tower. You must be careful when you run the ant wire through your tower. The wire is small and difficult to repair if you cut it. The new ant is the size of a matchbox. I have the old ant and it has not moved even with 118 temp at Parker AZ. Another consideration with the Delphi unit it that it is really susceptible to current drops. When your bass hits, it turns off the unit. I have a dual bat system and run the stereo and amps off one bat and the Delphi on the engine bat. XM just went commercial free in Feb too.sigpicComment

Im also Upgrading to the New Clarion with the Sirus. I have tons of music on my I pod and dont think I would be needing it, but I would like to know form you all what is involved in getting it to work. What do you need extra becides the Sirus ready headunit.( I have heard somthing about a reciever??? What does it cost to subscribe each month? and antennas. what is the best antenna to run? Sat in Boat
XM just went commercial free last February (except for channels like CNN). They have 10 to 1 the subscribers of Sirus. Check the internet but you will find XM has cleaner sounding music too. Remember, both Sat radio system use codec to encode and compress the music and XM seems to sound better. If you have an aux in on your HU then you simply plug the sat receiver into it. If you are buying a new HU you can get one that has either XM or Sirus. The sat receiver is a small box that plugs into the HU and can be controlled by the HU. Or you can go with a portable system like the Delphi Skyfi or Roady. This way you can have a cradle in you other vehicles and take your music with you. Price 10 bucks a month for XM and 13 for Sirus. You can also FM modulate through your existing HU if it does not have an aux input. This is the method I am using and have been really happy with it. As for ants. They are down to the size of a match box now. You just need to put it up high (on your tower if you have one. If left on the dash you will lose signal when peps walk in front of it. our 04 SAN the we just purchased came with sirius. does it come with like a 2 month trial or something? someone told me you could get a trial on it so you dont have to pay for the first couple of months or something.Comment

I put xm in my boat this winter, I have the Delphi skyfi I mounted my receiver below the keyless ignition. (covering some warning stickers) I ran my antenna all the way forward in the bow beside the lifting ring. (UNDERNEATH the fiberglass with double sided tape) It has worked great, the signal goes right through fiberglass. I had to use a fm modulator because I have the clarion xmd1 HU. I trailered from Ohio to Florida and back and it stayed put.MOE SCHLABACHComment
