Another problem of engine noise in speakers...

    Hi,

I have a problem of engine noise since few days on my 230, it appeared without particular reasons... So I searched the internet to find the solution and I find this guide : http://knowledge.sonicelectronix.com...-engine-noise/

I follow the steps give by sonicelectronix and, apparently, my problem come from my head unit ground (a Clarion CMD6, before it's was a CMD5 but the previous owner change it himself). So I check the HU ground connection and he's only connected to my amp by a little wire... I suppose it's not the proper way to wire the HU ground and, maybe, it can be bad for my amp ??

In your opinion, what is the best solution to connect the HU ground (directly to the battery despite the distance ?) ? Or maybe there is a ground plate somewhere near the HU...

    Thanks !

    Hi,

Here's come summer and new season for the boat ! but I still have the engine noise in speakers... I still suspect that the head unit ground wire is the problem.

I would like to have your opinion about the questions in my previous post.

    Thanks for your help !

Actually (at least in the newer boats) Nautique recommended 2 fixes... One was removing the stereo ground from the bus in the engine/battery and connecting directly to the amp's ground. Unfortunately when I did that (essentially what you have currently) it did not correct my issue. Lots of threads about it on here if you search for it, unfortunately I haven't found a solution yet, if you do please share.

So what is Nautique's 2nd fix?

Need to keep in mind, that ground is only one half of a 12V DC circuit.

Thanks for your answers. I check many threads here but I still don't really know...

I will try to connect the stereo ground wire to the battery and i'll let you know if it work. I hope that can fix the engine noise issues, if not, maybe I can try to put a ground loop isolator...

The factory stereo's wiring on my 2008 SAN is really messy so i wouldn't be surprised if the problem come somewhere else... To do well, it would be necessary to rewire all the stereo wiring harness !!

Have this same issue in a brand new 2015 230. Tried grounding the Head Unit to an amp (didn't get rid of the noise) then moved it directly to the battery (noise still there). I also went through the steps of checking RCA cables and trying to separate any grounding/power wires from stereo wires still the sound remains.

My next thought is to ground the amps directly to the batteries but not sure if that will cause some kind of issue with the amp getting power from the battery switch panel in the power management terminal but grounded to the battery?

Basically same exact issue here, have done all the steps you have and had the same final question....."not sure if that will cause some kind of issue with the amp getting power from the battery switch panel in the power management terminal but grounded to the battery?"

I was thinking of grounding EVERYTHING to battery bank 2....but not sure if that would cause issue with positive coming from different battery? Let me know what anyone thinks. Only a mild DIY'er so if i run risk of frying any circuits I will just take it to a pro audio shop!

I plan on doing the above steps as well to try and isolate the noise source as well!

Isolating the noise source is where I would start. See if you can connect another device (like a phone) directly to the amp and see if your still have the noise.

You can try connecting the stereo directly to a speakers and see if you have a noise there.

I have this on my 1996 Super Sport that I picked up last week but haven't had time to investigate it.

Yup got to step 3, had noise after removing the rca cables at the amp, then started looking at how the ground/power wires were routed and wanted to confirm no issue with changing amp grounds from ground bar to battery.

After many try to wire the head unit ground somewhere else, the engine noise in all speakers is still here (the stereo on this boat makes me crazy, sounds crappy)... So my last hope is the ground loop isolator...

In addition to battery negative, the head unit requires battery positive to operate. Seems there are other avenues yet tried, before a GLI.

Hexa73 do you have a ground bar near the batteries? I think I have found the source of my issue. In my 230 the batteries and head unit are grounded directly to the ground bar and a 2 gauge wire runs to the engine ground. HOWEVER the amp grounds are being ran from the circuit breaker panel. Talked with the dealer and he said this is probably the source of my issue but I couldn't confirm because I didn't have 4 gauge wire to re-run the ground. I will be able to confirm over memorial day weekend and report back findings.

Also from research go through the various grounds and confirm the bigger gauged wire is closer to the block. I read it could be a source of feedback and found a couple places where grounds were flipped with smaller gauge wires closer.
