Hi everyone, I have a G21 with the stock HLCD speakers 2 sets (4 speakers total) on my tower. I am wondering if anyone has changed the speaker out to something of a higher quality that would provide more base and better sound for surfing? We surf 99% of the time so a long throw is not necessary. I would like suggestions as I really don't want to change the cans. Thanks

If all you do is surf, I would either trade your cans HLCDs for cans loaded with coaxial speakers or sell yours and buy a used set of the same cans loaded with coaxial speakers. Either way you don't have to take the cans apart and you should get some money back since the HLCDs are more expensive. The coaxial speakers should give you much warmer sound. I don't know if the Rev6x9s will fit or not2007 Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV, 1995 Cobalt 200

I don't want to bother with selling the speakers, just thought there may be a high end 6 inch speaker or high end none HLCD style 6X9 that someone may have tried.Cpan13, I did check out the Wetsounds rev 6x9 speakers as well. I believe they would be better for wakeboarders.
Has anyone heard the new JL 8.8 speakers? I was considering changing to them? I just like the stock cans best, they are sturdy and I like the down lighting.

I'm sure the JL 8.8s sound fantastic, but I don't think those round speakers will fit in your oval or rectangular cans.2007 Malibu Wakesetter 23 LSV, 1995 Cobalt 200

True, I was considering changing to those speakers (cans) they are now used on all the new boats. Still, I would rather find a high end speaker that will fit the cans I have.
Please anyone with extensive speaker or stereo knowledge chime in.

Switching the round 6.5 HLCD to a round 6.5" coaxial would be a perceived increase in mid-bass because you would be going from an aggressive compression driver to a more balanced coaxial with a dome tweeter. You would have to go with a 6.5" that has a pole mounted tweeter and separate grill. The grill would get left off. The Kicker PSC654 has a pole mounted tweeter and separate grill, but do yet know if its mounting flange and bolt pattern fit.
Next best options is to go with a 6x9 coaxial like the Kicker PS694. Larger overall ans smoother sounding than the round 6.5 HLCD. These have a pole mounted tweeter and separate grill and are a direct fit in the pods.
The Wet Sounds 6x9 HLCD will also fit, but is not the first to come to mind for more mid-bass and surfing. Just note though, the Rev-6x9SM is a loaded enclosure setup, not a raw driver like the Pro-696RS. I do not know at this moment, if the Rev-6x9 is going to replace the 696RS as a raw driver. I mention this because the Pro-696RS sounds much like the older Pro-80. Very bright. Not nearly as smooth and balanced as the Rev series. If the new Rev-6x9 is going to be available as a raw driver, I would certainly consider it then.

Sorry to hijack this thread. I've got the focal 6X9's in our 23 right now and I can barely hear them when wakeboarding. Would the Wetsounds 6X9 HCLD's be a big improvement at 70 ft? Will they drop right in? Are the Pro-696RS the same driver as the REV-6X9SM? The specs look the same.

Jeb,
Yes, moving to an HLCD will improve the wake range projection, but you will likely need additional amplifier power to reach their potential.
As noted above; At this current time, the Wet Sounds web site indicates that the REV-6x9SM is a loaded enclosure, meaning that the you get a speaker diver in a box. The original Pro-696RS part number is just for the speaker driver as it was intended to load into a customers existing pods like the Titan II or similar. Although the basic specs look the same, there should be some significant difference between the Rev-6x9 and the older Pro-696RS, same as between the retired Pro-80 and the new Rev-8.
I would not be surprised that in the near future, we see the Pro-696RS replaced with a Rev-6x9 raw driver. Just note, im not hinting to any insider info.

FYI - Like the original poster I would like to keep my cans and upgrade the 6x9 speaker. I have been on the lookout for something that would work and have been watching the Wetsounds website to see if they rolled out a new Rev 6x9 driver. I was excited to find they have a new product called Rev 696RS listed on their website however I noticed it looked identical to the older Pro 696RS. The specs were identical too.
I just called Wetsounds and inquired if it is a totally new driver or if they have simply rebranded the old Pro 696RS as a Rev 696RS. I was disappointed to hear it was a simple rebranding and it is the same as the older Pro 696RS.

I want to first confirm some info since my original post, and 2nd, clarify some incorrect info.
The new 6x9 HLCD has been confirmed to be available as a raw replacement driver. So for those with the roswell OEM pods or others like the Titan-II, these can be purchased by themselves, no pods, as replacement upgrade drivers.
Lastly, The new Rev-696RS is NOT in any way shape or form, a re-badged pro 696. I say this because I just got home from the 2016 IBEX show in Tampa FL, where I saw, held and listened to, then new Rev-696RS. I got to demo these in in a live system Not a demo board inside the hall, but 3 pair on a boat, out side, on the water. Each powered by a 185W rms off a SD-6.

MLA - I don't know what to say other than if that is the case then they need to educate the people answering the phone at Wetsounds. I spoke to someone (Nick I believe) and asked him point blank if it was a rebranded Pro 696RS. He said yes it was the exact same. I am really interested in listening to these now that it sounds like they are new. That's good news.Last edited by Bevostein; 10-07-2016, 02:36 PM.
