    iPod

So I have never given much thought to the iPod or MP3 players in general. However, my better half was not happy about carrying her walkman CD around the club and said that she looked like a dinosaur with it. “Even the older women have iPod’s” So for her birthday I picked up the 30GB iPod video.

These things are AMAZING. Not only did I put 60+ CD’s(used less than 3G) on it this weekend, but found out that with a Monster adaptor, we can play the music in the boat without skipping issues…. Let alone the shuffle options, play lists ect…. No more changing CD’s….

Anyway…..I feel like I have discovered electricity or something….. This may become what I consider my favorite purchase since the SAN.

    RE: iPod

Ipods are funny, we all think "wow those are so expensive." Then you get one, put your music on it and wonder how in life you didn't have one before. I just changed out my stereo to the new Alpine HU (Alpine CDA-9856) that came out with the iPod adapter. It's pretty amazing, put one in my truck then decided the boat needed it too. Deuce welcome to the whole new world of iPod everything. You'll be hooked, just watch out at the itunes store, gets easy to start downloading music before your remember it's $.99 a song and see your final bill.

      RE: iPod

I totally agree. I got a Harman Kardon Drive+Play. It added my IPOD to my near perfect Super Air. I have no input on my Alpine deck so I had to do something. I am the biggest IPOD fan out there. Pretty much readsy to remove the CD changer, just taking up space.

      Have fun.

I need to find out what way, if any, I can hook directly into my boat stereo. I hear that it may be a better option than a transmitter?

I am like a kid at Christmas.....

That HK Drive+Play is unbelievable, in my opinion. It is even tuned to a fairly strong FM station in area, and totally overides it. If you buy it from Crutchfields, they give (free) you the cable that pipes it into your antenna port on the deck. I am under the impression that most FM transmitters suck. I read enough on them that the direct connection was the best choice. Also, the interface operates just like the ipod, so you don't have to fumble around learning something new. check it you and let me know what you think. Cost $200, but who cares !!!

I'd highly recommend the Alpine Alpine CDA-9856, not only can you hook the iPod into it directly and see it on the screen, you can add an extra input for things like XM (which I did). The cable just comes out of the back and you plug in the iPod, it charges it while in the cable. You can then bury the iPod somewhere safer in the boat...for me that's in the meguriar's bag next to the driver. Now this may not be as cool as a Grant set up or some of the other ones you see on here but it works for me. I just take the iPod and the XM between my truck and my boat. Plus, now none of theses are going through FM modulators which I have had very little luck every getting to work correctly. I've only seen this Alpine unit at Cructhfield and Best Buy (in stores)

if you want to hook to your existing stereo there are quite a few options depending on which head unit you have. some of the higher end stereos have iPod specific adaptors, or you might have RCA input jacks already on the back, in that case it's a super easy thing to do. If you don't you can always get an FM modulator that will put the signal in through the antenna wire (not the transmitter, these actually are wired into the antenna), i have those in both my jeep and my truck.

right now i have an FM transmitter in the boat, i hate it. i'm trying to decide whether to replace the head unit with one that has inputs, or just getting another FM modulator.

i have 3800 songs in my iPod, i can now keep almost anybody happy with the selection of tunes on the boat.

Going to check the head unit tonight and see what options I may have.

3800 songs.... Again, these things AMAZE me & I cannot believe that I waiting this long to take the plunge.

Add...skiswm...looked and the Alpine CDA-9856 and Bestbuy has them for $200 at present, so that also may be an option.
