My G23 has what I think was the level 3 package, basically 4 amps and 4 tower speakers. The in boat speakers (bow, cockpit, dash, and sub) all seem fine. I went through and adjusted the amp gains and such.
The tower speakers are not performing very well. They are the Roswell hlcd models and are driven off of a single Polk D4000.4 amp. Of the 4 speakers, 2 seem fine, 1 isn't hardly producing any sound, and the 4th sometimes is ok and othertime has a hiss and crackling sound coming through it (even with the music paused). In typical fashion, the boat setup was lacking (for example, the amps were on HPF, but the attenuation knobs were all to the max frequency). I need to do some more troubleshooting, but have a question on the amp wiring.
Right now it's wired as the 4 tower speakers each to an amp channel. The speakers are 4 ohms each, and looking at the amp manual they are getting 125 W each. The speakers are rated for 100 / 250 W peak. So, they are pretty underpowered. Would wiring the speaker pairs different (perhaps in parallel) help? The amp is rated 400 W x 2 in bridged mode at 4 ohms. If I parallel and bridge each pair, they would get 200 W each but would be at 2 ohms, not 4, which is outside the rating. If I do parallel wiring of each pair, but not in bridged mode, I'm not sure what power they would see but they would be at 2 ohms. Again, the tower speakers seem way underpowered to me so I'm trying to fix that (along with the actual his/crackling thing).
As far as the rest of the system, you have the sub on a D1000.1, the 4 cabin speakers on a D4000.4 and the dash/bow on another D4000.4. I don't understand why, but the dash/bow amp was in 4 channel mode (not stereo) and had 2 sets of RCA connecting to it--why is that not just in ST mode and 1 RCA.
There's also a audible hiss in the system, but I've seen dozens of other threads and ways to work on reducing or eliminating that.
Anyhow, kind of a long and rambling post. Any suggestions or comments like "whoa, that's not right, redo it like this...." would be appreciated.
As a side note, coming from using a 420 controller for years, the push button volume control is just plain terrible. I'm going to have to add a dual zone controller.
Thanks!
