ht4 help

Hey everyone. I've got a 94 nautique with a total of 8 Polk db651 speakers being powered by an ht4 4 channel amp. Speakers are all 60watt rms and the ht4 is a 600watt unit. I've got two speakers wired in parallel to each channel just as the ht4 guide shows but recently the amp has been in and out of protection mode and will shut down two channels at a time. Amp does this both engine running 13+ volts and koeo. The amp is only slightly warm to the touch and sometimes will play for an hour or more at a time before going into protection. I ran this same setup minus one speaker (unplugged bc it was blown) last year all season with no issues. ive got the gains turned down from the previous years settings as well. Any ideas on why the amp may be doing this? Thanks in advance

First want to confirm voltage at the amp. If chnls 1/2 or 3/4 are dropping out, its a good chance that that has narrowed you down to those 4 pair. Check them as pairs and then individually. Id start with the speaker thats paired with the blown one last season. This also assumes that the remaining amp setting are reasonable.

What size and length power and ground wire are you using? Make sure these have a good connection at the battery.

Did you confirm the voltage at the battery for both power and remote wire?

Are all speakers still working?

I've confirmed voltage to the amp. I'm using 4gauge wire for power And ground as wetsounds suggests. The cables are roughly 6 feet in length. All speakers are working

Does this happen at low volume, or only when playing music loud?

Full volume is 33. I've had the issue from volumes as low as 16 to as high as 28. Doesn't seem to happen faster on higher volumes but once in a while you can lower the Volume down to zero or turn the radio off for a few seconds and it'll play fine again for a short period of time

Have you tested the impedence of the spekaers? I'd suggest doing that.

I'd also suggest checking the voltage at the amp at the time you are experiencing the issue. Confirm the voltage of the remote wire at this time too?


The possible problems are basically bad speaker/bad speaker connection or bad power wire/ground wire/remote wire connection.

You may have a bad wire connection that is heating up after some time and that's why it only cuts out after playing.

You could also have issues with your amp.

Read this and see if you can trouble shoot the problem.

Problem was solved. It was a combo of a bad aux cord and the tower connections grounding out to the case. I don't know how they even played. System is performing great now thank you everyone for all your help
