xmd3/xmd1 swap didn't work

Having heard that swapping my xmd1 in my 2002 Air Nautique with a refurbished xmd3 would be a piece of cake, I thought that I could do the work myself. Following the installation instructions, I first disconnected the negative leads on both batteries. I then removed the screw covers and screws from the xmd1 and pulled the unit out.

As I expected, it looked to be an easy plug and play swap. I attached my monster cord to the auxillary jacks, the jacks from the grey leads on the xmd1 to the grey leads on the xmd3, the jacks from the black leads on the xmd1 to the black leads on the xmd3, the antenna, and then the 16 pin connector lead. Simple right?

After connecting the batteries back up, I entered my code and pressed "Start", anxious to experience the ultimate in mp3 tunes but when I pressed the power button on the xmd3 - ABSOLUTELY NOTHING HAPPENED! Ugh.

Ok, this was a refurbished unit so I figured I got a lemon and I'd just send it back. The only problem is that when I reattached my old xmd1, it too was dead in the water. The only sign of life exhibited by BOTH the xmd1 and xmd3 was that when I pressed the CD eject button, I could hear the eject mechanism power up. Other than that, nothing at all...

All other electrical components on the boat seem to work (heater, blower, navigation lights, etc). I verified with a 12 volt tester that I am getting power to the 16 pin connecter - what did I do? Any thoughts would be sincerely appreciated!

Make sure you have both a constant hot (yellow) and a keyed hot (red) and black -12v. If you have those 3 then it should at least turn on.

Did you check the circuit breaker / fuses?

I did check all the circuit breakers and all are OK. What do you guys make of the CD Eject button generating internal activity when nothing else seems to work?

It does sound like the switched power wire is not wired correctly. Usually you can eject CD's without the radio being turned on if the constant wire is good.

I would start analysis with the red switched wire.

Be sure you did not connect the remote control from the old radio in the new. I don't think it will work with the new radio.

patoloco - you were exactly right. Seems that when I pulled out my original xmd1 unit, the red switched wire must have been a bit shorter than all the others and was pulled completely out of the 16 pin connector. We found the red wire today, put it back into the proper slot in the 16 pin connector and everything is working perfectly. Thanks to everyone for their input!

Have you thought about an M455? I think that's what I'm going to replace my 5475 with. It comes with an aux input, should be a direct replacement, and is fairly cheap on ebay.

I was looking at the m455 or the xmd3 on ebay. I like the xmd3 since I would be able to get rid of that glass door that folds down, but not sure how much work it is to make it mount correctly in that opening. I know you would have to do some tweaking.

I do want the aux input for the ipod and it would be nice if the wiring harneses were exactly the same to save on install time.

Does anyone have an experience with the M455?

I just want something to play cd's, hook up the ipod and push the stock speakers well.

Installed the m455 today in a quick and dirty install just to have it for the weekend. So far it sounds decent. The aux in seems to work well, but even with the aux adjustment set to high and the ipod vol set to 3/4 its still a bit low on the volume side.

I'll give it a go this weekend and check it out

Wiring harnesses are different..had to cut the existing harness..some of these wires have 3 different crimps in them now, looks like it came that way from the factory..I'll probably go back later and clean it all up Other than that, it fits perfectly.
