    10" to 12" G23 Sub Upgrade

I am looking to change out the factory JL 10" sub in a 2016 G23 in the main compartment with a 12" Roswell. For those of you that have done this, any advice? It looks like the stock 10" hole is pretty close to a stringer on the bottom. Did you bias the wider hole up? What tool did you use to cut? Anything else?

    Thanks!

I would use a JL 12” instead of Roswell. That area is not a sealed box and the JL subs are designed to use as Infinite baffle subs. I put a 12” under the drivers dash (same place that the factory puts it in the Studio Elite package). That way you can leave the factory look and not have to cut the sea deck under the observers seat.

Just worth noting, if the factory set up on your boat is IB then you should stick to a sub designed for it. JL does make subs designed for enclosures. just make sure you get sub that has the suffix "IB". a 12" would help move more air, but honestly, you should look into an additional sub before a larger one.

more cone area = more volume for the same given wattage.

personally, i would ditch the IB set up or add additional IB sub before I would increased the size of an IB sub. but JL all the way when it comes to marine subs.

We currently have 2 10" JL subs. Was looking to upgrade the one in the main compartment.

^^^^^ You mean the factory location in the port mid-ship locker? Have you vented the locker? Stepping up to 12" from a 10" would certainly gain you some additional output, but you wont really hear those gains as long the woofer is closed in an insulated locker.

That locker is not airtight by any means. We had a Roswell G23 enclosure in there with a 12, which was great. However, there was very little difference between having the locker open and closed (or trash door open) and sounded great closed. The only reason for taking the Roswell enclosure out is that we take a lot of surfboards and wakeboards out with us, and will be taking even more this season, and we need all the space around the boat we can get.

I do appreciate all the feedback. I would be interested to hear from someone that has made the stock 10" opening bigger for a 12.

BTW - The Roswell enclosure is for sale in the classified section of PN.

Yep, I would be curious if anyone made the opening bigger. Last year I replaced the stock 10" with the free air xs-10. I had planned to put in a 12 but it was tight. I can't remember if I bailed ultimately because it wouldn't fit or if I just didn't want to cut the sea-dek, or got lazy. I am old, and can't remember.

I will say that even the properly powered wetsounds 10" free air as good as it is, sounds worse then my old boats cheap 12" polk dual voice coil which was in airtight enclosure.

Others can weigh-in but I think the enclosure is the bigger issue than the sub size. I am personally some what disappointed that nautique did not simply make the existing space airtight. It would be easy to do as part of the engineering and build process.

Tuning an IB woofer has a lot to do with its success. The insulated locker (never said it was air tight) also hurts. You also need to drive the XS with some solid wattage. The Polk 5 chnl is capable of 400W rms but you need to go with the 2 ohm 10FA.

A 12 will fit, but you are likely cutting the hole offset not symmetrical around the original hole. Trace it right and a new razor blade will make clean work of the sea dek so once you mount the new woofer, you dont know its been trimmed. Heck, its amazing how many G's ive seen where the factory cut the original 10" hole WAY OFF and the factory woofer was mounted over the sea dek on one side, leaving an air leak.

Yep, you helped me originally. Thanks. The one I got is the 2 ohm.

The JL 12 is really a big improvement over the JL 10. But you also have to power it properly. The factory set up only has 200 watts going to the sub. That is not enough for the 12”.

Ok I have done a few things I cut the the hole to fit a 12" and it sounded pretty good I also had a 12" Kicker CVX in a pro box I had a vent cut in the design of the speaker covers and put it where the roswell vent goes. I Had a Rockford p500 that puts out around 800 watts @ 1ohm and I have my bass turned way down because it can be Too much it vibrates the water around the boat I have run both 12" s at the same time and it still sounded good but for the most part I ran the 1 in the box facing the outside of the boat with the port facing the back of the boat and still had plenty of room for boards

Mine came with a JL 600/1 for the subs.
