Review - Roswell R1 12" Sub, RGB Controller & G Series Sub Enclosure

I grabbed a G Series sub enclosure last summer, and it was a worthy add-on to our G23. This year, we are stepping it up with the addition of the new Roswell R1 12" sub, and a Roswell RGB controller.

What can I say, the sub hits hard - even using the stock JL amp in our '16 G23. I really like that there is a simple switch on the sub to go from 8 ohm to 2 ohm impedance - no having to wire up between inputs, etc. to change your impedance. I also like the all white look, and the grill provides good protection from boards and such that are thrown in the compartment. It fits awesome in the Roswell G Series box, as you would expect, and it seems that these two components really compliment each other.

The R1 comes wired up with LED lighting. I chose to get the optional Roswell RF remote RGB controller, which allows you infinite lighting colors and various LED modes. The remote is as good as I have seen, with a touch scroll "wheel" for changing lighting color and an LED on the remote that approximates the color displayed on the sub - you can set your color without even seeing the sub. It also gives you some music matching modes that actually work pretty well - I am not usually a fan of these types of modes, typically opting for solid colors. Having the system use RF, rather than infrared is key - no line of sight remote worries.

This all was a huge upgrade for our boat, especially since the '16 came with JL 10" subs. But it would also be a great upgrade for a '17 or newer as well. The stock sub sounds good, but the R1 sounds amazing.

I have a kicker cvx in a pro box and I also cut vents to let Bass out I am wondering if the roswell speaker and box would make any difference. I would hate to spend that much to not make a difference. I wish I had a comparison

        Chris,

In short, two same size woofers in the same enclosure powered by about the same wattage will have about the same output. So trading one 12 for another will not necessarily make a difference. If you woofer is in a sealed enclosure, you will gain output by going to a ported enclosure, no woofer change needed. if your woofer is in a ported enclosure, then we need to look at wattage driving it. if its in a ported enclosure and driven with proper wattage, then to gain more output, we need to then look at excursion or a woofer that handles more wattage, and a new amp.

All things being equal, you will have similar output between same size subs. But, there are a lot more variables to woofer performance than size - xMax, power handling, efficiency, component materials, impedance, etc.

I can say that I ran a nice sub in the same box, with the same amp last year - the Roswell R1 blows it away.

Has anyone has combined the Rowsell enclosure + sub with the OEM infinite baffle enclosure to make a dual 12" sub system?

If the boat has a single 12" in the OEM spot on the port side, id just install 2nd 12" in the OEM spot on the STBD side.

MLA I may have overlooked something in my 2013 G23 but I think there's only one OEM spot on my boat and that's on the port side right? Or are you suggesting putting a 12" in the built-in OEM spot on the port enclosure then getting one of the Roswell boxes and putting it below the hidden helm area on the stbd side and then venting that side too?

SCNautique210SAN The deck cap is symmetrical. It wasnt until like 16 or 17 when the 2nd woofer option was available, but the spot has been there.

MLA That's super interesting.. Are you saying there's another enclosure ready for a sub under the helm!? That would be amazing

Or, are you saying that it's ready for a roswell box?

No enclosure, just that the deck cap looks identical to what it does on the port side where the factory woofer is cut in. No, you would not get the roswell G enclosure in the STBD side, but you can install a free-air same as the factory woofer on the port side.

Thanks MLA . I'll take a look the next time i'm out on the boat! I think that's a no brainer if there's a spot for another free-air
