A specific question about flush mounting/top loading coaming pad speakers

So I’ve used the search extensively and know this has been the topic of many boards. But my question is when you convert a 2002 San with the recessed speaker mounts to flush grill mounted where do you place the adapter ring that so many speak of that is gotten from amazon? From what I see, it somehow goes between the vinyl and the foam somehow? I am replacing my coaming pad skins and would love to tackle this as I’ve got some Polk db651s laying around and I’m sure they have to sound better than 17 year old recessed mounted kickers.

Make sure your speaker covers are attached with screws. Snap on covers have a tendency to fall off.

Thanks for that tip. Do you know where the adaptor plate that so many talk about goes? Does it go behind the vinyl or what?

Unless the foam is very thick, like 2"+, I dont feel a spacer is needed if you prep the foam and vinyl to all the speaker to recess. For thick foam, you would want the space behind the speaker so to not compress/stretch the vinyl too much.

Redoing the vinyl is a perfect time to make the speaker conversion

So are you saying if the skin is installed a certain way, the speaker can be mounted without the plastic ring?

If you are starting with fresh vinyl and the foam is not too thick, yes, not spacer needed Click image for larger version

Do your grills hit/rub the back seat when you raise it?
