My first look at the new software for installing the JL MVi amps!

    Gang,

Got to work on a 2020 G23 today. The owner bought the boat with no tower speakers or amp so it only had one amp for the sub and cabin. We added another amp for the tower and speakers. The wiring is pretty straightforward.

These new amps do not have any switches or dials on the outside to configure them for zoning, bridging, etc. It's ALL done with the JL software. I downloaded that to a laptop and connected to the amp with a USB cable. At first, it is VERY confusing. There is a LOT of functionality here. Mostly we needed to map the inputs to the outputs to "tell" the amp what to do. This is much easier if you label everything. Label the low-level cables going into the amp. Label the speaker out wires. In the software, label them there as well. Having them labeled "Tower Starboard 1" is far easier than remembering that it's "Output 5" or something like that.

Once we had everything labeled and mapped, you just send the configuration to the amp. It takes effect immediately and we had them going. There is so much functionality here. You can set high and low pass filters on each channel individually. A full equalizer is built into the amp. You can bridge channels, set gains, reverse polarity on wires (I would not do this. I would fix the wires instead).

The software is free on the site and will run in simulation mode if you're not connected to an amp.

    A follow up:

From the factory, the existing amp was driving all six cabin speakers and the sub. A high pass filter is configured to send everything from 80Hz and up to the cabin speakers. Everything from 80Hz down goes to the sub. This makes pretty efficient use of the amp.

For the tower we were adding a separate amp. It's a big 600W model. We considered setting a high-pass filter at 80Hz for these as well but ultimately did not. For now. we're going to run them full range. The speakers are full range and this amp should be plenty and not under-power them.

Which model amp is the new one, compatible with the computer programming? Would be a great write up with some pics.

All of the new MVi amps are compatible with each other. JL makes a pretty extensive line of them.
