Big subject here with little information and without the most important item being budget. But I have some time before heading to the boat so I'll give it a try.....

If you're looking at doing a factory level, high quality installation you could easily be into the $2500 - $3000 range for the installation using top end gear. If this isn't in the stars for you or at least not all at once I typically recommend doing the installation in phases over the course of 2 or 3 seasons using things like Christmas and birthdays to help cushion the shock and mind blowing expense of doing a quality installation. To give you an idea of the cost lets run down some prices of quality gear to give you an idea of what you'll be into making a ton of assumptions as we'll need a lot more details before any real recommendations or materials lists can be made.....

Head Unit $200 - Assuming single DIN head unit, no one is doing CDs anymore so don't buy a unit with one. A media player like this Clarion is a cost effective solution and will provide the features you need to get started.

Cockpit Speakers (4) $500 - Assuming you have 6.5" speakers these JLs will do nicely without breaking the bank for mid tier speakers.

Tower Speakers $900 - These JL tower speakers are good mid tier speakers and will do a good job. If you want a bit more punch the 880s for $300 more are where I usually take people.

Sub $360 - I typically will spend a bit more on the sub as they tend to get beat on a bit in the heat of the moment when the party gets started. This JL 10" will handle some power and will sound good for the money.

Amps $1000 - Due to the power requirements which in turn will determine cable sizes, breakers, connectors and such I like to break the system into two amps here with all the speakers on a 6 channel amp and the sub on a dedicated amp. If you know you'll never add any more speakers (like bow or another set of tower speakers) this can be done with with a 6 channel amp and either a 2 channel or mono block amp. To keep things simple and just for pricing I'll use the 6 and 2 channel amps. The JL 600/6 has been my go to amp and the go to amp for many high end boat builders for years including MasterCraft and Nautique. Same goes for the 200/2 we'll be using for this example.

Zone Control for the Tower Speakers $65 - This is something I always add to my system builds for more a bit more function over some of the other builds I see. Every one of these I've done has been extremely well received and very much worth the money/effort. You can easily and quickly adjust the gain on your tower speaker with a single knob located at the helm.

Misc Installation Supplies ~$300- Unless you've been doing installations over the years you'll need to plan for items like....
    • Power and ground cables.
    • Breakers for the amps.
    • Marine grade speaker cable.
    • Heat shrink tubing and heat shrink crimp connector in various sizes.
    • Terminal ends for the cables.
    • Tools for the fabrication and installation of the power/ground cables.
I like to use these guys for my installation components.....

So all in with you doing the installation you're looking at roughly $3300. Now if you shop smart you can easily take 20% off this in the off season and buying at times like Black Friday. Keep an eye out here and other high end boating sites like MasterCraft Team Talk and the Malibu Crew and you'll most likely be able to find some lightly used gear that will take close to 50% off those items.

The only other area we haven't touched on is power. While having a dual battery set up is recommended (as I have no clue how you'd be using the system) it is not mandatory and once again is something you can add down the line if you think you'd like it. But that's an entirely different topic and conversation.

In closing... The biggest recommendation I can make regardless of which gear you choose or how big of a system you decide to build is to buy good gear and do the installation correctly the first time. No one ever saves money buying gear they won't be happy with or doing a half a$$ installation that fails or falls apart when you're out on the water. The systems I build always sound good, work correctly and will last a log time. Do it on the cheap and you'll have none of these attributes.
