Ok all you Techies... Try this one Ipod only in a 196

I want to put an Ipod in my 2000 196. JUST an Ipod.. No CD player No AM/FM No satelite. I found a Belkin adapter with a pre amp Model number F8V7058-APL Why cant I just wire this directly to a 4 channel amp and on to speakers? Is there another way?

IPOD directly to the amp works fine, I have done it. No real reason to add any other component.

the ipod voltage is really, really low ( if i remember it is in the millivolts depending on the model..) not enough voltage for the amp inputs - a preamp is needed..

i am not saying it wont work, but there isnt enough voltage there (you will have to crank the output up past normal which will cause the amps to run hot) and this is compounded if the interconnects are long (minimum 8 volts)..

here is a very good thread off wakeworld..

Don't forget to bring your iPod to the lake! A little FM keeps me in touch with the world. I heard there was a car chase starting from the county we boat in and ended (after flipping the stolen pickup) where I played golf last friday. Fun stuff.

get a head unit for the extra 200 bucks, listen to ipod, cd, mp3 disc, and fm.

clubmyke has some good info and check out the link.
          I don\'t care.

i have run my ipod into my amps only using an adaptor cable, headphone jack to rca. it worked fine. in fact for the rest of the summer i might just rewire my boat that way. no use remounting a head unit that i plan on replacing this winter anyway.

Ok then so you lose the ability to fade and control volume easily, doesn't sound all that useful eliminating the head unit.

Volume thru the ipod, and how often you you adjust the fade? Set it on the amp, and forget it, but a pre-amp would be a better solution.

Pre-amp or EQ that can give you decent line level control.

IPOD directly to pre-amp works very well, I sometimes just bypass the deck and run mine that way. The IPOD volume is easier than the deck volume anyway, at least it was until I installed the remote at the back.

If you have the ipod mounted directly to the inputs and eliminate the head unit, then how do you activate the "remote" (blue wire) on the amps?

The remote turn-on for the amps can be tied to any ignition lead, just like the remote turn-on for the head unit.

Thanks guys. I don't want a head unit because I wouldn't ever use it. Any preamp suggestions would be great. Luckily Clubmyke lives about 10 minutes away. Looks like a free dinner offer for help is on its way.

                            rick,

why not use the eclipse head unit and put in the dash ? ipod/ preamp dont offer fade, balance, tone control, loundess, crossover.

your eclipse is 5v out, aux input (ipod), ir remote...

i think the coolest thing ever invented for a ipod is the harmon kardon drive...

The Harman Kardon Drive+PLay is indeed the coolest thing ever for the Ipod, and for my boat. I have had one all year.
There are several things about it that make it so.

a> I have not had to charge my Ipod all summer, it does it with the unit when attached.
b> the controls are identical to your Ipod
c> you can hook up any Ipod, not just your own, it doesn't care
d> there is also an AUX for other MP3 players

This thing is my favorite boat accessory of all time.
