    Help with tower speakers choice

I am upgrading my Roswell 6x9 cans to something with better sound, fuller range at surf and wake distance. My understanding is that a new 6x9 in the existing can won’t make much difference, maybe that’s wrong? I am running the factory Polk 4000.4 amp, but will upgrade that to something which will put out enough power for the speakers if necessary.
I understand that 2 Wetsounds Rev10 put out the same sound as 4 Rev 8. Makes no sense to buy 4 speakers to do what 2 will accomplish. I am concerned that the Rev10 will be too large and I will be hitting my head on them. Does anybody run just a single pair of Rev 8? Would that be not much improvement over my 6x9? What about JL audio? Should I even consider them?
Boat is a 2015 230. I want it to sound good, but I am not looking to be the loudest on the water. Thanks from an older Dad.

I believe they are the coaxial. They have the round center tweeter. Just one pair.

really? Good to hear, but I have not heard anything positive about upgrading the 6x9 speaker at all. Anyone else with experience doing this who can chime in?

There was a guy in this sub forum a few months ago. You will have to search for most of the threads. Most of the people doing this upgrade are the second or third owners by this point.

Well you have Focal 6x9's in there now, that is a good quality speaker brand for sure. But a 6x9 speaker will not perform anywhere near the quality of a Wetsound Rev 8 or the JL 8" M880's. You only have 1 set of those? Maybe add another set up there and have 4 total.

Not sure on the intended context of "quality", but no way on gods green earth you can compare an 8" HLCD with an 8" dome tweeter coaxial. However, you can compare a 6x9 w/dome tweeter to a round 8" with dome tweeter.

If your goal is surf/party cove, then a marine grade 6x9, like the Kicker RS694, is a direct replacement. If you want to up the volume for the rider, then the Wet Sounds Rev 6x9 HLCD (comparable to the round 8" Rev-8) is the way to go. If you want to change the entire setup, then go straight to a large HLCD like the Wet Sounds Rev-10. Best of both volume and sound quality.

Installed the wet sound HLCD last summer in my Roswell cans. I am happy with how it turned out but do need to look more at my amp settings. Because I had the airborn HLCD speakers, I did end up buying the adaptor rings from Roswell which made the install much cleaner. I think because you have the Focal speakers you already have the adaptor ring.

I am looking for new 6.5” speakers for the bow and helm but now wondering if the factory Polk amps will have the power to drive them. I am looking at the JL audio M6.

M6-650s max wattage RMS is 75 watts, the 770s take 100 watts. The polk amps will work fine on either, you will hear no loss of performance with a few watts difference.

If he's keeping the same amps, where is the few watts difference?

Amp setting; you could possibly cross the 6x9 a little lower then the old 6.5", say 80-90 Hz. If its the 4 chnl polk AND the gain was set correctly for the previous 6.5", nothing to touch there. If its the polk 2 chnl, then you may have a little gain left on the table form the old 6.5, that you could push to the 6x9.

Now, dont read what im not typing! im not telling you to just go in and up the gain. Its not a volume dial.

The polk 5 chnl has decent 4 and 2 ohm wattage and will do well for pretty much any in-boat. One big improvement is to toss the 4 ohm polk woofer and install a true IB woofer thats 2 ohm. This gets you the untapped wattage from the woofer chnl and improved performance over the non-infinite-baffle woofer. The Wet Sounds Revo-10FA is a good choice.
