Stereo 15a circuit breaker keeps popping - any idea why?

The 15amp circuit breaker for my stereo keeps popping on my 2007 Nautique SV 211 TE. It's a Clarion CMD4A head unit. Does this signify that something is wrong with the head unit itself? If I unplug the wiring harness from the head unit the circuit breaker doesn't pop.

It's worth noting that the alternator was recently repaired but thats the only electrical related issue recently.

I think I confirmed the head unit is bad. Disconnected from harness and hooked directly up to battery and was unable to get it to power up.

If you're popping a 15 amp breaker there's a short somewhere. Could it be the head unit? I guess but that would be a new one on me.

Where do you think the short could be? I haven't messed with any stereo wiring.

If you unplugged the stereo and it stopped that would seem to be the place. I've just never seen one do that. Apart from that you'd need to trace the wires and look for any place someone may have ran a screw through the wires or that they may have been chaffing and rubbed through.

short to ground most likely inside the CDMA4, sounds original to the boat. Not surprising given the age on the boat. Get a new source unit, clarion makes several marine units, you could keep your remotes and get 4 zone control with the M608.

Thanks for the info. Exactly what I ended up doing. I just need to get an adapter for the remote as the plug is different.
