Well, the project is now officially started. I picked up my new CMD5 on Ebay for $162 with the CCAUX cable included. I thought that was a pretty good price for a new head unit. I've heard mixed opinions on if I need to replace the stock XMD1 remote to be compatible with my new HU. Can anyone clarify?

Everthing is going well except that I can't get my driver speaker working. For the novice, what's the next test method to check out where the problem is? I assume I hook up a voltmeter to see where I have power loss. Is this correct?

Did you install a new speaker in the driver side and replace all wiring or just swap the speaker out? Are you wiring to an amp or going to the HU? If you are using existing wiring and want to see if the speaker is hooked up just grab a C or D cell battery out of the house and hook the wiring to the pos and neg on the battery - the speaker should pop or make a sound - if it does you can rule out the wiring or speaker. This might be easier than pulling out voltmeters or swapping channels on your amp or HU.

Thats an easy method to see if wiring is right, i used a cordless drill battery to test speakers when rewiring my stereo.

It's only a head unit replacement at this point. Hooked up the new HU while everything was removed just to test the CMD5. All other speakers worked fine.

It's a process of elimination. Change the drivers speaker from the output of the headunit to one of the outputs that is producing sound. If it works then you either wired wrong at first and just now did it right, or the channel is blown. Then try hooking to the "could be blown" channel with a different speaker. If the drivers side didn't work when you switched to a different output it's probably the wiring. chase the wiring and check connections, etc. I don't know if that makes sense, or not, but PM me if you're still having trouble.

Also - I really like the look of front mounted Polk's. I think they look great!! I would dEFINATELY go with a marine speaker in the front, due to the wetness and possibility of a dunk. check underneath and see if you can get to them from under there. i hope you're not claustrophobic!!! (or find a small buddy to get up there.)
