    LT206 stereo upgrade

I have a 2003 Air 206, and one of my winter projects is reworking my stereo system. In concept here's how it's shaping up so far. Sorry in advance for the zillion questions....

    new tower speakers

2 channel amp (or 4 channel bridged to 2 channels) for the tower speakers - I want some way to control the tower speakers separately - I'm sure someone can suggest a good way to do that - line driver?

12” sub w/ dedicated amp - may have to go with a 10" if I can't find a 12" box that will fit? Anyone have a suggestion? I'm liking the Alpine R series 12" but the Alpine S series seems to be cost less -anyone have experience with the S series? I don't need overkill bass, just some low end presence.

4 channel amp for the interior cabin speakers - I'm keeping the stock 100watt clarions. It's been recommend that I should get a 4 channel for the rear 4 speakers and run the bow speakers off the head unit. Will this work ok?

New CMD4 for the head unit since my XMD1 won’t play cds most of the time. Which also means new remote – I’m thinking the remote for the CMD4 is the same dia. As the remote for the XMD1 so it should be a direct swap. Can anyone confirm?

Has anyone put a sub under the dash in their 206? I'd like to know your experience. I took off the kick panel last night and it looks like a good bit of room except for the shift cables and steering cables are pretty rigid and I'm not sure how much slack they have to move them around. I'm thinking a sub box roughly 14w x 14d x 16h will be as big as I can get - if I can move the cables a little bit. Another option is to rework the kick panel breaker location and do like Mikeski has done and mount the sub in the kick panel. This looks cool, but do you still need an enclosure mounted on the back of the kick panel or can the space under the dash act as the enclosure?

Just looking around on ebay i'm thinking i can get this system put together for around $1,000 if I can find the right deals at the right time.

I dont think I'll need an electrical system upgrade with this system - if I keep that wattage on the amps reasonable . I probably will have to be careful about running other accessories like ballast pumps and lights while pushing the system hard though. Any thoughts?

I think this system will be more than adequate for what I want and very controllable from a volume standpoint (to keep my wife happy - the kids will love it loud) especially if I can control the sub and towers separately from the cabin speakers. I'd love to hear comments from others that have been down this road before. Thanks.

I would do it with two 4 channel amps like as shown in this table under A and A2. If you wanted to start with one amp Option B or C would be a good start. Don't wire it the inuitive way as shown in the last two columns or the amp will overvoltage with the 8 ohm speakers and blow. This diagram is specific to 8 ohm speakers. Take your pick word or excel...

Ok here's an update - I've finally gotten my components together - here's what I've got.

One 10" alpine type R sub.
      Pair of EVID tower speakers.
Kicker ZX700.5 amp to power the cabin speakers and sub
Kicker ZX450.2 amp to power the EVIDs
Factory refurbished XMD1. I really wanted to upgrade to the CMD4, but I'd have had to get the head unit, plus the dash remote, plus have Sierra Hobby make a new bezel trim ring for the dash. I may do that later, but for now the XMD1 will work. ($50 vs $450 for the CMD4.)

Hey mikeski - thanks for the help with the wiring diagrams, and thanks for putting up with all my questions.....I didn't go with the Directed amps as you suggested but I think this should work out just as well, and take up less space.

The only thing I lack is the wire and distribution blocks and controller for the tower speakers.

I'll post some pictures as this goes in for all to see.

I really like the streetwires distribution blocks, they are very stout and should hold up in the marine environment. Get the screw down fuse style, not the clip in kind. I had issues with corrosion in my old clip in e-bay distro block.

Those amps should work fine, just make sure you wire the evids in the parallel/mono configuration with a two channel amp.

I did get the streetwires distribution block with the screw down fuses.

I probably shouldn't be telling this, but I test fit my sub box today - it's going under the dash behind the kick panel - it didn't fit - I made a 14x14x12 box (about 1 cu.ft) - it's going to have to get modified to be an angled front box by taking about 6" off at the top so the angled kick panel and fuse box can go back in....oops.

            wire it llike this?

Here's how I've got my EVIDs wired to the amp. Take a look and tell me if I'm right. I've wired them in parallel to create a 4 ohm load on the amp running in mono. I'm thinking each EVID is seeing 225 watts from the amp putting out 450 watts at a 4 ohm mono load.

              RE: wire it llike this?

Ha-since you have my exact model Nautique, help another Alabama brutha out and please post some pictures when you're finished-I'm planning to upgrade my equipment as well in the next couple of months. I'm probably going to mount a 12' sub below the passenger seat for a little more volume. I sort of like those 8' Bazooka tower speakers so I'm probably going to add 4 of those. I like the Clarion marine 4 ch amps, too.
