I have a 2003 Air 206, and one of my winter projects is reworking my stereo system. In concept here's how it's shaping up so far. Sorry in advance for the zillion questions....
new tower speakers
2 channel amp (or 4 channel bridged to 2 channels) for the tower speakers - I want some way to control the tower speakers separately - I'm sure someone can suggest a good way to do that - line driver?
12” sub w/ dedicated amp - may have to go with a 10" if I can't find a 12" box that will fit? Anyone have a suggestion? I'm liking the Alpine R series 12" but the Alpine S series seems to be cost less -anyone have experience with the S series? I don't need overkill bass, just some low end presence.
4 channel amp for the interior cabin speakers - I'm keeping the stock 100watt clarions. It's been recommend that I should get a 4 channel for the rear 4 speakers and run the bow speakers off the head unit. Will this work ok?
New CMD4 for the head unit since my XMD1 won’t play cds most of the time. Which also means new remote – I’m thinking the remote for the CMD4 is the same dia. As the remote for the XMD1 so it should be a direct swap. Can anyone confirm?
Has anyone put a sub under the dash in their 206? I'd like to know your experience. I took off the kick panel last night and it looks like a good bit of room except for the shift cables and steering cables are pretty rigid and I'm not sure how much slack they have to move them around. I'm thinking a sub box roughly 14w x 14d x 16h will be as big as I can get - if I can move the cables a little bit. Another option is to rework the kick panel breaker location and do like Mikeski has done and mount the sub in the kick panel. This looks cool, but do you still need an enclosure mounted on the back of the kick panel or can the space under the dash act as the enclosure?
Just looking around on ebay i'm thinking i can get this system put together for around $1,000 if I can find the right deals at the right time.
I dont think I'll need an electrical system upgrade with this system - if I keep that wattage on the amps reasonable . I probably will have to be careful about running other accessories like ballast pumps and lights while pushing the system hard though. Any thoughts?
I think this system will be more than adequate for what I want and very controllable from a volume standpoint (to keep my wife happy - the kids will love it loud) especially if I can control the sub and towers separately from the cabin speakers. I'd love to hear comments from others that have been down this road before. Thanks.
