2004 216 sport signature edition: speakers: 7.7 JL or 6.5?

I tried to do some research but it looks like there's not much information on PN. My boat has what look to be stock clarion speakers without cloth in front of them. I've already got a m800/8 amp for the boat, a tower is ready for install. My last boat was all JL and I'm a HUGE fan. Hoping someone can clarify if a 7.7 would fit in the speaker grills or only a 6.5 would. Measuring it physically the opening is 7.25" but I cant see how the clarions are mounted. (no cloth in front of them.) I do not have the bow speaker pods. (something i'm looking to fix in the future.)

For the rear, do I use a Philips head screwdriver to loosen the grab handle, then pull the pod? or is this a full interior panel out job?

I ask because creative audio has 770 series for nearly half the 650 in the version i want and i know from my last boat the 770 towers were substantially warmer, though the 650's were no joke either.

You need to pull the gunwale pads off and seat back to get the pods out for speaker replacement. I upgraded from original speakers to Polks 2 years ago. And my factory speakers were a total pain to remove. Polks are screwed in from the front and easy to remove....now.

If you have factory cloth grills, they run screws in from the side behind the pod to hold the cloth rings.

Thanks for the help I appreciate it, my clarions show no screws (and no cloth) so I'm intrigued to see how they are mounted. (most likely the same)

Your Clarions should just have a cover on them that pops off. Most of mine came off extremely hard and broke trying to take the covers off on my 04 196 that I did last winter. Then it will just be the four screws holding them in. I don't think 7.7's will fit without a lot of modifications. I put mid grade 6.5's in mine ran off a 4 channel amp and they sound great.
