04 sante tower speaker question (added component)

I have an 04 sante and get distortion in my stereo system when I start to crank the volume to any level above a medium sort of listening level (25% of the max setting is as high as I can go before it starts to sound bad).

I bought the boat used and have had the distortion in my whole system from the beginning. I have a friend who knows stereos and he adjusted my amp gain and crossover with no success in eliminating my problem.

My system has an adjustment knob mounted just under the right side of my dash. The adjustment knob adjusts the power to the tower speakers kind of like a fader of some sort. I assumed the adjustment knob was standard from the factory but I am suspecting that it is a user modification and possibly causing some of my distortion problems.

Does anyone out there with an 04 sante have this same adjustment option or know if it would come from the factory that way?

I am thinking about removing it to see what happens. Thanks for any help I can get.

Unplug the amp audio input cables and hook an ipod or other portable directly to the tower speaker amp. See if it distorts, that will determind weather its upstream or downstream of the amp.
