RE: New WetSounds Grills - Bling!
I'm looking at some black ones and had a couple questions.....
Where'd you get the grills?
Is the LED extra?
How's the headroom and bimin clearance withose?
How much do they weigh?
How easy are they to remove/what does it require to remove them (I'll be putting them on and removing them each time I ride)?
Thanks. btw, those look saweet!

I added the LEDs.
They are no trouble above the bimini, it's tight but not as tight as my previous speakers. They are headbangers but at least they are plastic with rounded corners so they don't cut when you smack them.
They weigh about 40lbs each.
I remove them after each outing, four bolts each takes 5-10 minutes, part of the wipedown ritual.
Thanks for the compliment.

I am running a very different amplifier, avionixx 800.4 strapped to two channels:

It's extremely efficient converting electrical power to audio power, saving alternator/battery draining current. It is a little quirky send me a note if you have any questions.

OK, I had a couple PMs so I should probably elaborate a little more about this amplifier.
It uses class D topology with a signal processor to clean up the power so the amp is clean enough to operate full range loads. In general class D amplifier efficiencies are about 80% versus the typical class A/B efficiency of 50%. This particular amp uses a clean up processor from TriPath. If you are interested you can read more about the technology here: www.tripathpower.com
I have been using tripath amps for about 4 years now with lots of success. But nothing is free, right? These amps are a littly quirky. Then can make strange noises at certain volume levels and at certain temperatures. On one or two occasions I have been sitting with the boat off with the stereo at very low volume levels and I can very faintly hear a noise that sounds like sizzling or crackling coming from the speakers. It's a little unnerving, one of my buddies actually though something was blown up in my system. I reached over and bumped the volume up two notches and the sounds disappeared. I even contacted the factory and asked them why they quit making the tripath amps. They told me that the amps exhibit a 3% instability issue that lead to a 20% return rate.
What's all this mean??? To me it means that I get an amp that meets my needs 97% of the time giving me significantly more run time without having to dig too deeply into the wallet.
If you have a few more bucks and want current technology look at the new Alpine PDX amps. I think they might be the best solution for boats I have seen. I was hoping to see more options at the Consumer Electronics Show but I did not. Most companies still think bigger is better. Some of the HiFonics amps could double as a wakesurfer...
