    Alternator Suggestion

Can anyone recommend an alternator for my '99 Sport Nautique that will require the LEAST amount of modifications to replace stock alternator with new. I am looking for around 80-100amp output. I would really like a Balmar HO 160amp, but can't spend that kind of money right now and really don't want to deal with all the modifications to belts and pulleys, etc that would be required to install. Thanks in advance....

    RE: Alternator Suggestion

I bought 100 amp alt kit from skidim. Factory conversion for my excalibur. They were very helpful and it was easy to install.

      RE: Alternator Suggestion

Here is what I did...........I went exactly down the same road as you are thinking. I was this close {} to doing the Balmar setup, then I started looking into everything and getting a custom water pump pulley made and on and on........soon it was $1500.........I bought two new Optima Blue Tops, and this kit. Everything is perfect for me! I also added an onboard maintainer battery charger from Minn Kota. Now all I do is plug it into the wall outlet and both my batteries stay charged. No more undoing the battery boxes and opening up the v-drive cover to charge batteries.

wake_fun, tell me about this onboard battery maintainer from Minn Kota. Would definitely be interested in something like that.

I have a 140amp Marine alternator from Dbelectrical.com, if you are going on the route of the new alt.

I think I went an extremely similar route to wake_fun. I added an additional battery, upgraded my alternator using the exact same kit which I ordered from Midwest CC, added a battery combiner to isolate my starter battery and to top it all off I have a Power Tender Plus from Battery Tender to plug in and top off my two batteries while I'm off the water.

wakefun/jhiestand, do you think that this kit will fit a carb 351?

                Re: RE: Alternator Suggestion

This unit has two seperate charges in one unit. Leads come out of the unit and hook up to each battery. There is a plug that comes off of the unit that you can just plug into an outlet or extension cord if necessary. Lights on the unit tell you if the battery is charged or not. You can just leave it plugged in and it charges both batteries. Or just plug it in whenever you want. It will automatically sense if the batteries are getting warm/hot and won't overcharge the batteries. Check out their website and you will see them.

Check out the diagrams I posted. If your wiring looks like that, I don't see why not.

I'd think it would work for a non injected 351 also, but I'd ask the CC guys when ordering it just to be sure.

wakefun, I have four D31T optimas, do I need to purchase the 4-bank charger (one "bank" PER battery)?

Yep, that's what I would do. It would have 8 leads off of it then. Check the dimensions of it and make sure you have a place to mount it. There is also another brand called Dual Pro Charger. You can check those out also. Go to Cabelas web site to see both brands and how much they cost.
