Why does a 2007 come with an old stereo head unit?

I just picked up a 2007 SV211. It has the factory head unit, namely the Clarion CMD4. I was perusing the Clarion website for info on a good IPod hookup and noted that the CMD4 has been superseded by the CMD5.

Looking into this, it turns out the CMD5 was announced by Clarion on Jan 6, 2006 (YES Jan 2006, NOT 2007).

So my question is, why is a 2007 boat, delivered in May 2007 still coming with a head unit that is at least one, if not more, years old??

I was kind of surprised to see that in my 236 too. I don't have the answer though, unless they just bought a ton of them back when they were new.

You probably have a CMD4A, which will accept an ipod interface giving you control and data from the iPod on the indash remote. I don't think that the CMD5 actually became available until around April or May of this year. When I was ordering the interface for my '07 196 in April Crutchfield listed the CMD5 as "Available soon". I can see why they wouldn't want to change head unit models mid-model year as the CMD5 wasn't available at the beginning of the model year.

I know for sure mine is a CMD4A, so maybe that's right.
