    Polks into a 2001 Air? MikeSki advice needed.

    Mike,
    You've got a ton of experience with various 6.5" speakers and Nautiques, so I figured I would ask before I pull the trigger on some Polks for my 2001 AN.

    You seem to be a fan of the db675s and Crutchfields has Polks on sale this month, so now is the time.

    Will I have any problems getting the oversized db675s to fit in the stock locations on the 2001 AN? I am a little worried about the speaker mount near the drivers knee (see picture). I do not plan on keeping the grills so I would be front loading them. I believe I only have four speakers not including the towers.

    The db675's work well on top load installations where they are no more difficult to install versus the 650's. The sound is not that different from the 650's. Your 01 Air has rear loaded speakers so you should probably stick with the db650's to keep the install straightforward. On the other hand Grant just installed a 6x9 Boston Acoustic speaker in the location pictured above on his boat, a highly customized install. My point is you can install different speakers in different locations depending on your skill and interest level. Grant also mentioned that moving the speaker in front of the cloth made a big difference in the high frequency sound.

        MIke told me about this thread: I noticed a differance between the speakers on the front side of the cloth. Plus I gained a few inches by moving the speakers to the front side of the vinyl you can see some pic's of how i did it here as well as a bunch of other pic's

          Not sure if the 2001 air interior was done the same as my '03, but if they are you might want to consider making some baffles to go into the interior. The way that CC did it from the factory is total crap. They used two different sizes of PVC and then tried to screw the mounting screws into the edge of the PVC. I put the MMC650's in mine and I was always worried about the speakers falling out. I did something very similar to what grant did in his bow for all of my speakers. It took a good week to do, but was well worth the work.
