    2001 SAN stereo ?.......

i have a 2001 SAN and im looking to upgrade the stereo. i know that there already issues w/ the battery this year barely getting enough power to the PP. im looking to add 2 amps and a sub.

whats the best way to do this and have NO battery issues? add battery? upgrade alternator (is this necessary?) if i add battery is stock alternator enough to power both?

    any help is much appreciated!!!

The 2001 Stock alternator will not be strong enough to handle this load. It is a 55 amp alternator. If you have the gt-40 I believe you can call your local dealer and have them order a 100 alternator from CC. Otherwise any good alternator builder can make one, just make sure it is suitable for marine use.

I also have a 01 SAN and did the same thing except I am currently running 3 amps and added another pump and switch to plumb in a front sack. I ended up getting a Hellroaring isolator/combiner and did not have any issues this whole summer.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks,

    Scooby

I had a huge system in my 00 SAN and ended up adding 2 alternators. I had 2-135 amp alternators on it to keep up with the load. If you need big power i would go with the balmer alternators, but they are very high dollar!!! Other wise check out ebay.

airhuck - Sorry about that I’m actually running two deep cell batteries with the Isolator.

I’m not sure what CC will charge for the 100 amp alternator, unfortunately last I checked they did not have one for the big block so I bought mine from a local Alternator house for about $125. I just gave them the Mando number on the back of the alternator and they could easily cross reference it. Also if you do go this route have them put a smaller pulley on so it charges better when idling.

          Hope this helps.

            scooby ,thanks for the response.

i have never messed w/ adding amps/alternators/batteries. so i have a few questions. if i add a battery will the alternator charge both battereis at the same time? what does the isolater do?

            thanks!

Essentially what a battery Isolator will do is allow you to charge both batteries when running, but will have them separated for discharging purposes. For instance, when you want to listen to the music with the engine off it will only discharge the aux battery (this runs all of your stereo stuff), thus saving your main battery for starting. And then when it senses a current from the alternator it will allow a charge to go to both batteries. So yes the alternator will be able to charge both batteries.

But again the stock alternator will be struggling to keep up with charging two batteries and run the accessories ie. Ballast pump, bilge, perfect pass etc.

I luckily had a friend that was a Wiz with this stuff that really took the time to run me through it. I know he visits the site once in a while, I think his screen name is gotwake. If I have any stereo or electrical related questions he is no doubt my first call.

Anyways, let me know if you have any other.
