What AMP(s)/Equalizer for a pair of NVS tyrants

    Hello guys,
I have bought a pair of NVS Tyrants to upgrade the sound system in my 83 Ski Nautique. Currently I have a Clarion 475 head unit, 4 JBL 6x9's and a 10" polk sub. The 4 6x9s run off a clarion 480 amp, and the sub is on a bridged clarion 280. I have just purchased a tower and a pair of NVS Tyrants and now I am seeking some opinions on setup and amps from the guru’s here on PN as it has been 10 years since I was up on the latest and greatest in mobile audio. I have a hundred amp alternator on the boat with currently one blue top, I will be adding another but I really don’t want to go past that as I still have to slalom ski behind this boat and this is already going to be enough extra weight that I am going to need to leave a cutie or two on the dock.
I would really like to get the Tyrants powered right at the 400-500 watts rms (4ohms each) they are rated for, I like the idea of a tripath or a class D amp to keep the power consumption reasonable down. Specifically I am wondering about the feasibility of running an Alpine PDX 1000.1 to power the two Tyrants in parallel. Alpine claims the amp will run just as well at 2ohms as 4ohms so I should see 500 watts rms per speaker. However, I am concerned that as both a monoblock and a Class D amp I will see some issues using the amp with the mid/high Tyrants, as historically both these types of amp’s have been more suited towards subwoofer only operations, anyone have any experience or opinions on this setup? If not what amp/amps would you recommend?
Secondly on the install, the M475 has 6 rca outputs all full range, currently the 4 faded outputs go to the 480 amp and the two non faded outputs go to the 280 for the subwoofer, both amps have crossovers and are set to do what they should for the most part. I am going to be listening 75 percent of the time without the tower speakers on for neighbor relation purposes so I need to turn of the tower speakers at a minimum (although I can certainly do that with a toggle switch on the blue wire to the amp). Does anyone worry about distribution amps on this type setup or can I simply Y cable the non faded out puts so they go to both the sub and the tower amps and adjust the gains on the three amps so they are relatively in tune or am I really going to need an equalizer and if so where (in the wiring not on the boat) is it best placed
Lastly I plan to run the tower speakers mono, does it make any real difference where the signals are combined? If I can go with a monoblock amp I assume that I will just plug in both the left and right rca inputs and let the amp deal with it? If I end up with a multi channel amp how do I combine signals?
Budget is not too much of an issue but I do have 2 correct crafts at home to feed so I want to do it right however I don’t want to throw money away that I am not going to be able to hear.

Sorry for the long first post,
    Joe.

Call Duane at NVS - he will have the best advice for you with regards to the speakers - I have the Entity's and Duane suggested that other than the Zapco amps he sells the Kicker 850.4 wouold be an excellent choice in my case

Everything that I have read on the web about the speakers (wetsounds and NVS) is that the worst thing you can do is under power them. I tried to read up on as much as possible because these were what I thought that I wanted. I ended up going with some liquid sounds polk momo double instead. My budget just could not stretch far enough to et the amps to push them. I know there are alot of people using JL audio amps. Your best bet is to search on wakeworld and you will find a ton of info. Next year i might try and upgrade. I have interior, tower, and a stereo to buy........

Thanks for the comments and emails guys, I think I am going to suck it up and buy the Zapco 1000.4 amp. the alpine pdx 1000.1 is a subwoofer only amp rated only up to 200hz so thats not appropriate and for the size of some of the other amps I have looked at I figure I might as well go all the way to the Zapco, I will report back after it is all done in the spring.

Great. I have followed some of your other thread on CCfan. I cant wait to see photos of the tower install and speakers. I just installed my ND tower on my 98 SuperSport on saturday and love it. My buddy that has worked for and on CCs for 17 years said that the quality is as good or better than factory towers.
