Amps too much power for Alternator?

    I have an "06 216LE with 100 amp alternator.
Does any one know if using a single Clarion AMX280 (to power my subwoofer) plus two Clarion AMX480's (to power a total of 10 6.5" Polk speakers) will damage my 100 amp alternator. I only turn the volume of the stereo up to modest levels. The guy at my local stereo shop was concerned that the stereo plus all the other standard electronics including lights and the ballast tank pumps might put too much "work" on the alternator. Thanks

thats quite a bit of juice flowin, but if your not blasting the the speakers all day, i think u'll be fine with a 100 amp alt

Looks like you could do away with the 280 clarion. The 2 480 amps could do the job just fine. Bridge 1&2 channels together for the sub. 2 speakers on 3rd channel, 2 speakers on 4th channel then put the others on the 2nd amp. I have an 05 SANTE with 6 interior 2 tower and 2 10" kicker sub all powered by 2 clarion 480's. Both subs are bridged on channels 1&2 and all other speaker pairs share a channel. Thinking of naming the boat fish killer because it puts out serious sound. I only have a 100 amp alt and so far so good.

Indeed when not blasting the speakers all day you would be fine!
Also putting the sub on the 280 is a good idea.

myrtlebeachrider; sorry to say so, but it sounds like a strange setup to run both subs in parallel, bridged on channels 1&2 on a clarion amp. I'm afraid the amp is not pushing very long then.... I would suggest to keep the subs on 1 amp, one sub bridged on channel 1&2 and the other sub bridged on channel 3&4 (if this is possible with the Clarion low pass filter on channel 3&4). Expecially for subs it's important to not share the amp with sub and other speakers (like default factory setup).

Four amps (Clarion 480, Clarion 280, Kicker 750.1 and Kicker 850.4) Two factory batteries
System includes 6 factory polk speakers, one kicker 12" solobaric and NVS Entitys
Factory alternator and stereo has functioned very well for approx 2 hours before sub does not hit as hard (batteries getting low)

Mikeski - excellent sheet, thanks for sharing

Amps too much power for Alternator?

              Mikeski,
How do I use the chart ? And what am I supposed to be looking for?
I am planning to use 2 Clarion 480's (max of 640 watts each) and 1 Clarion 280 (max watts of 320). What type amps are these A or B or what? Thanks

Well i decided to get a new alternator for the 230. I will be running 2 class D amps at 1500 watts each and 2 a/b amps at 900 watts each for a total of 4800 wats. I got a 160 amp rated alternator that tested out to 181 amps. I will either be running 2 golf cart batterys and a optima red top for starting or I might just run 3 blue tops. We do very little just sitting on the beach listening to the radio.

RE: Amps too much power for Alternator?

Are you strapping the clarion amps together? (http://www.teamclarion.com/SharedWebDBs/clarionnews.nsf/7c4539c6b00a28d488256a4c00781d7b/1f01cd1c12ec4e4a8825733100657847/$FILE/April%202007%20Newsletter.pdf)

The golf carts have as much reserve capacity as four blue tops. Golf carts have slightly higher internal resistance and having them wired in series can limit the rate of power delivery on big bass drops (I notice it in my system with only 1500 watts of sub amps). I am considering a change from the golf cart battereis to two of the big kinetik batts. If you run the golf carts I would suggest a 3+ farad cap to help manage the current flow.

Is that alternator marine rated? You may want to check with Grant, he has done more research on alternators than almost anybody else on this board. He is currently running the Balmar system, but that required a costly custom fab of new dual pulleys.

Yeah I have thought about the kinetik ones also. I have a big 15 farad stinger cap. Mine is the serpentine belt so it should handle it. I had a dual alternator setup in my 00 san that worked good, just wanting something simple. Well see how it goes.
