i was planingon it going under the steering wheel, but its a little bulky for there. my next thought is behind passenger seat (under glovebox). anyone have any ideas??
In my '03, it came stock under the observer's seat. I moved it to under the dash. It worked out really well. The floor on the '03 is lower than the floor in the '01 though.

I have a 01 SAN and put a 10" speaker tube in front of the drivers kick panel. It sits between the kick panel and the bow seat. If you remove the cupholder on the drivers side in front of the window you can see the speaker tube. It sounds great.
putting it under the driver side would probably be best in my opinion only because under the observer seat really muffles the sound, If you could part the side of it it would be sweet cuz the sound and the air the sub pushes could get out and it would hit a lot harder.
