Retrofit trailer guide poles - canvas / foam covers on ABS

I launch on a very steep ramp. My trailer's steel guide poles end up submerged by several feet when my trailer is deep enough to receive the boat properly. This made me very nervous not being square on the trailer and even dinging my prop against my own trailer.

So..... I retrofitted heavy duty canvas covered foam guide poles to extend the height of the poles and to protect and guide the hull better as I approach the trailer.

I wanted to use as much plastic as possible to eliminate chance of rust / corrosion. So I used 2" ABS drain pipe, which is standard for these, i think. I bought the 2 3/8" ID foam covers for the 2" ABS (ABS OD is 2 3/8" also) and these fit snug. I bought 10' of 2" ABS and cut it in half.

The way I installed them is using a 3" to 2" ABS bushing split in half, which happens to have an Octagonal side to grab with a pipe wrench, so they fit flat against the square side of the original guide pole. I used a right angle grinder to hog out the flanged part inside of the bushing so they lay flat on the ABS pipes (not just flat on the end of the pipe). From there, I separated the fleece covered wool bumper and dropped the two hose clamps over the top. The stainless hose clamps are 3" to 5" diameter.
The covers were from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JPH5ZHC/...140_TE_3p_dp_1 $31.47 shipped.

    Perhaps this will help someone?

Thanks for sharing. I deep load my 210 and have the guide post that float up the deeper you go back, which really helps with getting out quick.

Hey, you bet. This should make it worlds easier to deep load for sure. I wonder if these will float up if submerged, too. Will find out. I hope the tops are above the rub rail at least. We'll see. If not, I'll make the new posts longer and buy some more ABS!

Doug - nice mod, it looks good. One thing I noticed in the pics that you may wish to adjust would be the positioning of the gear/screw for the clamp. This appears to be on the inside, near the boat and if it is the widest point, there may be a chance the boat could rub against it. I would swing that around make sure the "tail" isn't sticking in towards the hull. If they are not the closest point to the boat, disregard my post

Thank you for the comments. The gear / screw was indeed behind (not exposed to scratch the hull) the inboard covered wood protection. But, I ended up re-clocking it to push it much further outboard after the pictures were snapped!

          Cheers,
