Extreme trailer oil bath bearing hubs

Just towed the boat for the first time this season, is this a bad sign?

Is that grease or oil? I thought the oil filled hubs were supposed to be sealed.

lots of bad press on oil filled hubs and boat trailers. UFP gave me new bearing buddies for free just the get them off my trailer. apparently, the dunk in the lake after getting hot while towing can blow the seals and let water in or oil out.

I lost my second cap on my Boatmate with the vault system. It looks like they get hot build pressure and push the outer cap off. Throws grease everywhere.

Since boat trailers dont get used much, the seals the seals dry out. The boats are so heavy that the spindle can overheat to the point that it seizes to the axle. Ask me how I know (just last season). $1700 repair when that happens. Hopefully you just have to replace your seals. That will be inexpensive.

Yup looks like your seal went. I lost one off my trailer 100 miles after picking my boat up, I had no choice but to trailer it the rest of the way (1000 miles) before I could get a replacement. I didn't have any damage to the axle bearings or problem getting hot but I also have a tri axle trailer which I feel makes a huge difference on the heavy boats, I have a G23.

I know that post was quite a while back but, if it's not a rubber seal, something my mechanic told me to do with the oil bath bearing protector, is to put a bead of gasket sealer on before installing. I've never had a leak.

Cheap grease (even good grease) can almost liquefy when it gets hot.
