    Trailer brakes

    Tried backing up the other day up a hill with the boat and the hydraulic trailer brakes were doing thier job, to the point I could not move the trailer backwards anymore, is there a way to lock the brakes so they do not come on when manouvering backwards up hills, the more you push the more the brakes come on. trailer is a 2018 boat mate.

    Yes. When you're backing up a hill the surge brakes lean on the tongue and engage. That's why they're locking on you.

    Up on the tongue somewhere there's a pin that you can insert. You'll have to find it as it varies by trailer manufacturer. With this pin inserted the brakes will not engage. Keep in mind, that you do NOT want to tow with this pin in-place. It's only for this situation.

      I'm assuming disc brakes on a 2018 trailer as drums should back up ok, and I'd also assume that you should have a reverse lock-out solenoid on the surge coupler. If you do have a solenoid, either the solenoid has failed, or you're not getting power to it to disengage the brakes in reverse. For the solenoid to work it needs power off the tow vehicle's reverse lights. If you only have a flat-4 connector wired up, you'll never get the solenoid to engage, as it's not keyed into the reverse lights. You need to power off a 5 or 7-pin connector to get the reverse lights in the mix. So if you have a solenoid, check that you're getting power to it (and replace it if not), otherwise, a mechanical lock-out like Charles posted will be needed.         I have a 7 pin plug but on my truck side they may not be wired in that lockout device should also work but i like the solonoid idea better, thanks for the info..

          Make sure your 7 round connectors other end has a 5 pin flat (4 “exposed” pins plus one shrouded in rubber). 4 and 5 pin connectors are different and are often confused. Your trailer has the solenoid mentioned above and is either not getting the signal from the vehicle (“trailer brake”) fuse is blown, it is faulty, or you have the wrong connector installed.

            I found out yesterday that Mt trailer is equiped witht the lock out solonoid I moved the boat yesterday with the truck and plugged in the light cord wala!! the lock out worked, I think last time I moved the boat I did not plug the cord in for a 50' move lol, I felt like a twit.
