Trailering G23

Hello all,

After testing driving tons of boats over the last month, I went to a friends lake house who had a G23 this week. I realized this is the boat for me. Unfortunately, I don't have a lakehouse and would have to trailer this awesome boat. I'm looking at 2019 deals rights now. I'm wondering if anyone has any trouble getting this boat on and off the trailer as I would be doing this regularly. Right now I have a 20 foot Mastercraft that is pretty easy. Would it be much different?

I too am interested in this. My vehicle has a max tow weight of 8100 lbs and I don’t think going to 7500ish lbs mostly empty including a trailer is a wise move - at least for anything further than a few miles. Curious how people in the real world are handling this without going all the way up to a 3/4 ton...?

I do it regularly on my own.
Its a little painful at low tide when retrieving as I have to leave the boat half on the trailer and move the truck up the ramp a bit and then jump back in the boat to run it all the way up the trailer.
But if you had someone operating your tow vehicle........it wouldn’t be much different to a 20 footer.

Thank you for the reply. My wife is usually holding the boat on the dock as I back trailer in, then I float it on. You do it by yourself?

This is a good point. I have a 1500 Dodge ram. I think the towing capacity is around 10,000 pounds.

Yep.....if no one is around, I have no choice. For refence, I don't float, I drive it on.

Coming from trailering a 4000lb dry weight boat to the G23 @ almost 6000lbs I can tell you this is NOT for the inexperienced nor those without a very capable tow rig. Last year I did it with a GMC rated to tow 8100lbs and equipped with the Brembo package. Sweating the entire trip = 250 miles each time. This year I have been leveraging a friends F350 and will not go back to the GMC. Loading the boat is a little tricky but once you get a system down it’s pretty easy with two people. We float ours on and then power load the final 5%.

Load it like you are going out and take it to a CAT scale. My bet is you are much closer to 10k than 6k. I would not regularly tow one of these without a 3/4 ton, although some of the new 1/2 tons claim to be rated to tow over 10k (but I would still not feel good about a 1/2 towing that heavy regularly regardless of what they say on paper).

They go up to a 3/4 ton or they tow it with an insufficient tow vehicle, IMO. Loaded properly you are going to have 1000-1200 pounds of carry on the hitch which is going to eat the payload capacity on most 1/2 trucks and 1/2 ton based SUVs.

For clarity I am referring to the dry weight of the boat alone. As jack mentioned you still need a trailer fuel and gear. This puts you quickly in the 8000lb range.

I’m looking to purchase a new truck in the next 6-12 months and currently leaning toward a 3/4 ton. I do want to check out the latest 1/2 ton lineup from Ford and Ram. If anyone is towing a G23!longer distances with a 1/2 ton please chime in with your experience...

I feel like most people who have these boats must have lake houses and not worry too much about it. I looked up my Ram 1500 and my tow capacity is only 7750! I'm going to have to upgrade my truck to upgrade my boat .

I do tow a G21 with a 2016 F150 max tow package and reinforced rear suspension. I completely empty the boat and make sure the gas tank is almost empty and nobody nor anything is in the truck when I tow it long distance. Doing so is fine. That is not ok if the boat is full of gas and full of gears. So, I would be worry about a G23 not dry for long distance.

If you just tow from your garage to the ramp around 50 mph that is not a big deal.

2013 eco boost F150 pulls our g23 just fine. We’re only going about 30 miles each way. We’ve taken 1 road trip that was 5 hours each way. If we we’re going to do that again I’d want a 250. But for now, we get 9 miles to the gallon and the little f150 does the job just fine.

Around 11,500, that is around the max you can get with a F150 from this year. This max capacity is marketing only as you reach some other limits way before your reach your max tow rating such as tires max payload, tongue max weight, max truck carrying weight and more.
