Does anyone on here have a Ford F150 diesel...baby diesel...2019 or 2020 and pull a G23 at least to give a decent report? Just curious how it does pulling and what your real world mileage is non-towing?
No doubt the ford can pull it easily. However you are dealing with soft suspension and soft tires on any half ton. Unless making really quick towing trips, Iโd stick with a 3/4 ton with LT tires and the heavier suspension and payload capacity. YMMV
6000lb dry weight before trailer, fuel, cargo. Make sure you check receiver hitch capacity as many 1/2 ton pickups have that as their maximum for standard/non WD towing. Your door sticker may have a higher rating for the vehicle than the receiver, my F250 does as well.
Thanks guys. I have a F250 now but was just curious to see info on the F150 diesel for future purchase......seeing that 98% of my driving is without the boat and I get ****ty mileage in the 250. . My scenario is basically pulling the boat out of the garage and backing down the driveway to my ramp..... 4x4 a must when the water gets lower. Maybe one trip to the dealer a year for maintenance. Love to see 25 mpg vs 15 mpg. That's all. Not denying the safety and load aspects of both trucks.
Warning, towing shame coming I'm sure. But you asked so I'll answer as your needs seem very similar to mine.
I tow my G23 with my 2012 F-150 with ecoboost, FX4 package, trailer/tow package. Short distances, my ramp is a quarter mile away (boat stays in the water for the season). And 2-4 tows a year to get it serviced or into storage, 12-40 miles. It does great (including stopping). I'd imagine the diesel would do even better for torque. And it's within manufacturer specs, and you can tell this when you drive it. And I get to drive a 1/2 ton for the other 20K+ miles I drive a year.
One ramp we use when the water is low is quite steep with little margin for error, I used it last week and pulled out the boat in 4 low like a hot knife through butter. I probably didn't even need 4 low.
Oh, and my truck has 195K miles on it without any significant issues (knock on wood). I change my oil religiously and keep my tires and brakes and great shape.
Next year the plan is to order the GMC 1500 AT4 with their 3.0 diesel option. Should have the updated interior they just put in the Tahoe.
Thanks Kmayotte. That's along the line I am thinking. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my 17 F250 Crew 4x4......but it has been a diesel sucking pig. It will be 4 years old next month...got it Oct.of 2016. Even after fuel filter changes, etc, it still gives me only 14 to 16 "normal" driving...maybe...and I say maybe an occasional 17 on a highway trip. Just killin' me with the fuel bill for a big truck that I don't really get full use out of. Side note...my dad and I ordered exact trucks...side by side with the salesman...just different colors..and his is doing the exact same thing also...started strong....and has taken a complete dive. I have also read this EXACT problem on some of the Ford diesel sites. Mileage has gone way downhill since purchase. I'm about 15,000 ahead of his...since he's retired and doesn't drive daily as much. Thing that pains both of us....my brother just picked up a left-over new 19 Duramax...and tells us..."Yeah...i'm up to 19 and 20 the last few weeks". Yep...real nice to hear when we look down and see 13.9....LOL LOL I know this is a Nautique forum...and I have a G21...but do I really need a 250 Diesel for my "drill" that i've been doing the last 20 years. Garage at the lake house...VERY few towing miles mixed in those years with an occasional trip to a different lake 30 miles away and once to the dealer a summer...maybe twice if it's something I can't fix or bring from the dealer to fix. Thanks for listening.
F150 diesel is set up for fuel mileage not towing. Its max is 8500lbs. The 5.0L and 3.5L ecoboost do a lot better...upto 13k lbs properly equipped with ecoboost. so to answer your question, you could do it with half ton but it wouldnt like it long distances and fuel mileage would be around 8-9. Super Duty is the real solution.
Thanks for the comments 2016Sport...but I think you missed the whole point of my posts from the beginning. I'm NOT looking for mileage "pulling" my 21...and future 23...I'm looking for better mileage "Non-towing" but still have enough truck to back the boat down my own ramp...and pull it 30 miles to the dealer maybe once a year. I already know what the Super Duty IS and does..as I have one. I was looking for anyone that has a baby diesel...F150 to chime in. Thanks.
Not a diesel, but I have a 2017 F-150 with the 3.5 eco boost. 18-19 in mixed driving and low 20's on the highway when not towing. With max trailer tow package limit is 12,000 lbs. Currently 50,000 miles with no issues. Not sure if you would consider a gas motor, but it has worked well so far.

Thanks CincinnatiCC...yes...just looking for future options for better mileage non-towing. Might look at the Eco. I did see a video about the 2021 "Hybrid" F150 due out this Fall. Not sure on final specs...but might be a torque monster with an onboard battery and gas engine. I only have a diesel now because I did have a fairly heavy bumper pull Travel Trailer....but no longer have it. Just pull the G21 on and a golf cart trailer on occasion.
I just got a 2020 Ford F350. I got 20.5 MPG on a mix of freeway and 2 lane highway over 1300 miles. I hope it does not go down from there, it's supposed to only get better. My 2015 would have gotten about 15-16 on the same trip. There is an eco mode on it and also the suspension is significantly better than my 2015 was.

That's interesting. I don't have any experience with diesel honestly. I'm considering the GMC 3.0 simply for the fact that I do A LOT of highway miles (non-towing) and can get up to 27mpg. The engine will have been on the market for a few years by the time I'm ready to purchase so any issues should be known and well documented on the 100's of youtube reviews I'll watch by then, haha.
But suffice to say it seems the Eco-Boost is Fords work horse engine and where most of the R&D seems to be going. Considering the fact they are dropping it in the $500,000 Ford GT among many other models. The diesel seems more of an afterthought to compete with the GMC and Ram options in the half-ton.
I have a Ram 1500 Eco diesel (3.0 Turbo) which is very similar, it tows my 2004 210 pretty well but I would not pull anything near the weight of a G with it. Diesel cost more than supreme gas here in CA, so most of the time and I find myself wishing I had just bought a V8 I could put regular gas in. Braking/Manuevering has never been an issue, but I am only about 5.5K lbs loaded up.
