Trailer brakes locking in reverse

Does anyone have any solutions to stop the trailer brakes from locking up while reversing my boatmate trailer? I’ve experienced complications with my trailer while trying to reverse

I just went through that process and on the way to get them fixed they dragged in forward and I had to pop the tongue out. Turned out to be a loose connection on the solenoid. I would do a quick check on that first.

As stated above the first place to look is the circuit for the reverse solenoid. I always find it easiest to start at the tow vehicle plug and work my way back. Blue should be your backup lights which power your reverse solenoid to allow for free backing. With a meter check for 12 volts at the vehicle connector between that pin and ground with the car in reverse but not running. If you have power there do the same at the solenoid. If you power there but still have a problem you can have someone plug and unplug the connector and listen for the solenoid to see if it's actuating.

It's a pretty reliable and simple circuit. Most times if there's an issue it's a blown fuse in the vehicle or a broken wire somewhere.

I have had that happen a couple of times before at the boat ramp at the beginning of a season. Taped a 9/16" socket or so into the slot on the side of the tongue to keep it from sliding back. Since it worked after driving it home, I suspect it was either some corrosion on the hitch ball or in the trailer plug itself that was preventing a good ground. I have since purchased a lockout key to use instead of taping the socket in there but have yet to use it.

I have the one that came with the trailer. In reality I should never have to use it and if I do it means there is another problem. However, it s a pain in the as becasue the key with the trailer will continue to fall out so the magnetic key is a great option. Just dont use it as a replacement for solving a problem.

The magnetic ones are 50x better than the simple wedge fit keys. My last trailer had no reverse lockup (old school) so a reverse key was mandatory. Also a good plan B if the reverse lockout feature just fails....

after 17 years with this trailer I bought one of these orange lock-outs. It's better than sliced bread. I move trailers around with tractor and 3 pt hitch which doesn't have any power hook-ups
